Reagan Giving Circle at APSU to have award luncheon

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Reagan Giving Circle at Austin Peay State University will award more than $8,500 in scholarships to 10 APSU female students during its award ceremony next month.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30am, Monday, April 29th in the Clarksville Country Club, located at 334 Fairway Drive, Clarksville. Tickets are $25.00 per person.

Come out and enjoy a day of free, family fun. A bird hikes with the Warioto Audubon Society, wild flower hike led by APSU botanist Rob Shepard and a trail hike led by Suva Batsin from our local chapter of the Tennessee Trails Association.

APSU chemistry professor Bob Shelton awarded grant to advance green energy research

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Bob Shelton, Austin Peay State University associate professor of chemistry, has an idea for an extremely efficient automobile. He’d like to see a vehicle powered by water and sunlight rather than gasoline.

“In some ways, that’s the way plants work,” he said. “That’s what we’re going to try to mimic with our photocatalytic hydrogen producers that mimic the reaction of the oxygen-evolving center in plants.”

APSU’s Jill Franks to discuss new book at May 14th Spring Salon event

APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative ArtsClarksville, TN – In the early 20th century, a small group of writers, artists and intellectuals gathered in a fashionable London neighborhood to discuss everything from literature and art to politics and economics.

A brilliant but melancholy young writer named Virginia Woolf often attended these salons, known as the Bloomsbury Group, and it seems fitting that her presence will again be evoked at 5:00pm on May 14th during the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts’ Spring Salon Series event.

Austin Peay State University Wind Ensemble to perform Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” April 25th

APSU Department of MusicClarksville, TN – In the early days of World War II, the American composer Aaron Copland wrote a patriotic orchestral work to lift the spirits of a gloomy nation.

He needed a symbol of freedom to inspire a generation of Americans as they prepared for war, and he soon found what he needed in the words of a former president – Abraham Lincoln.

In 1942, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra premiered Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.” [Read more]

Relay For Life Supports APSU Breast Cancer 5k and Survivors Dinner

Relay for LifeClarksville, TN – On April 13th, in the midst of more than 200 runners, walkers and community supporters members of the Relay For Life Leadership joined the Breast Cancer 5k effort at Austin Peay State University.

Leadership Team members Karen Davis, Brittnye Farley, Paul Farley and Cydney Miller volunteered to assist with guiding and encouraging the runners and walkers on the 5k route.

APSU holds topping-off event at new Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University held a topping-off ceremony Tuesday, April 16th at the construction site of the new Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building.

James Maynard, a 1956 alumnus, local business and APSU supporter for whom the building is named, was the first to sign during the event.

APSU Opera to perform Hansel and Gretel April 20th-21st

APSU Department of MusicClarksville, TN – In 1980, a young Austin Peay State University music student named Lisa Conklin-Bishop performed the part of Hansel in the University’s staging of German composer Engelbert Humperdinck’s famous opera, “Hansel and Gretel.”

The work, a powerful folk opera with lush orchestration and tuneful melodies, was extremely popular with Clarksville audiences. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series: Art professor to present session this week

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University art professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Paul Collins, gallery director and assistant professor of art, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 18th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. His lecture will be about the Living Gallery Program, an experimental approach in using arts exhibition programming to engage students.

The Living Gallery Program was developed with funds from APSU’s Summer Faculty Research Program grants. [Read more]
