Clarksville Civil War RoundtableClarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Hospital.

This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall. The meeting begins at 7:00pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.

APSU choral program continues busy season with October 22nd Concert

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – This fall is shaping up to be a busy semester for Austin Peay State University Choral Activities. In early September, the University’s three choral groups – Vocal Ease, University Choir and Chamber Singers – performed for the Tennessee Board of Regents dinner at APSU.

A few weeks later, the Chamber Singers traveled to Nashville for a performance at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center as part of the Nashville Symphony’s Free Day of Music event.

APSU creates military tuition assistance scholarship to help students impacted by Federal Government shutdown

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Last Friday, Austin Peay State University officials distributed an email to their active duty military students, letting them know plans were being put in place to keep them in school regardless of the temporary shutdown of Tuition Assistance (TA), a benefit provided by the military to cover tuition expenses incurred by active duty military pursuing college credit.

On Monday, after notification was sent stating the federal budget had not passed, APSU president Tim Hall initiated an effort to implement a scholarship to offset the shutdown of TA. [Read more]

New APSU scholarship to honor legendary basketball coach Ben Fendley

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – For 34 years, if you wanted to play basketball at Clarksville High School, you had to first survive the grueling practices of that school’s legendary coach, Ben Fendley. The U.S. Marine Corps and Korean War veteran knew what his players were capable of achieving, so he made sure they went home exhausted each night.

“You had better be prepared to give him everything you had in practice every day, or there was no place for you on his team,” Wayne Pace, former CHS player and former chief financial officer and executive vice president for Time Warner Inc., said. “Practice was brutal; games were the treat.” [Read more]

APSU’s Minoa Uffelman contributes to new book on progressive Tennessee women

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In a cemetery in Gallatin, Tennessee, Virginia P. Moore’s headstone reads, “One of the First Five Home Demonstration Agents in the World.”

The inscription, at first, doesn’t sound too glamorous. In the early 20th century, home demonstration agents traveled to rural communities, teaching farmwomen skills such as how to can and preserve vegetables. Moore did this in Tennessee, visiting impoverished areas to organize tomato and canning clubs in the days before 4-H.

APSU Students earn high marks for research at famed Fermilab

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Mees Fix, an Austin Peay State University physics student, thought he might be in trouble. He was outside of Chicago, analyzing white dwarf stars at Fermilab – the U.S. Department of Energy’s national laboratory – when he noticed something strange. One of the stars was giving off way too much light energy.

“At first, I thought I broke something,” he said. “I figured I messed something up. I walked over to Dr. Smith and said, ‘check this out? What’s going on here?’” [Read more]

Celebrate APSU Homecoming with Alumni Golf Tournament and 5K Run

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Alumni Relations Office plans to welcome back graduates later this month with two special Homecoming events – the 35th Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament and the Homecoming Scholarship 5K Run.

At 8:00am on Friday, October 25th, alumni and the public are invited to participate in the golf tournament at Swan Lake Golf Course. The event, sponsored by Budweiser of Clarksville, costs $60.00 a person, and the fee includes a ditty bag, refreshments on the golf course and lunch. [Read more]
