Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – On a Wednesday morning in April, Kentucky journalist and author Carol Niswonger was busy combing through the archives at Austin Peay State University’s Woodward Library, conducting research for her new book on Land Between The Lakes, when she discovered something a bit unusual. Tucked away in a thin, manila folder was a short, hand-written poem titled “The Land Between the Rivers.”

“When I started to read it, I said, ‘that’s it perfectly,’” Niswonger said. “The poem, it epitomized the feelings of that area. It had such an emotional attachment to the land and the surroundings. I thought the poet was someone who lived there.”

Philip Voorhees became president of the Tennessee Association on Higher Education and Disability during the organization’s annual conference on April 13th.

Lynette Taylor, Martin Golson and Philip Voorhees recently were awarded a TBR Diversity Access Grant for serving at-risk students. [Read more]

APSU alumna Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Academic Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The mayor of Montgomery County, who also is an Austin Peay State University alumna, was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 191 Academic Hall of Fame.

Mayor Carolyn Bowers (’68, ’79) was inducted Tuesday, April 10th during the APSU chapter’s initiation ceremony. As part of a permanent tribute, her name will be displayed on a plaque housed in the Woodward Library on the main campus.

Austin Peay State University Library Athenaeum Series to discuss friendship and works of French composers

But in France, two prominent composers – Henri Duparc and Ernest Chausson – forged a deep friendship that bridged the two styles, ultimately defining a new era in French music. [Read more]

APSU PKP chapter collecting books for Candy for the Mind

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For the ninth consecutive Halloween, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) at Austin Peay State University is collecting new and gently used children’s books for its Candy for the Mind project. Members of the campus and local community are invited to support this effort through donations of books or funds for the purchase of books.

Through this project, PKP distributed more than 1,500 books to community children during last year’s G.H.O.S.T. (Great Halloween Options for Safe Trick-or-Treating), the on-campus alternative for safe trick-or-treating. [Read more]

APSU Phi Kappa Phi chapter awarded top distinction

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) at Austin Peay State University is one of 11 chapters in the nation to earn the Chapter of Excellence distinction for 2010-11.

PKP headquarters in Baton Rouge, LA, formally announced APSU’s achievement on September 21st. Another 21 chapters were honored with the Chapter of Merit award.

According to the national PKP, the Chapter of Excellence is given to chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engaging the community of scholars in service to others.

Woodward Library at APSU to celebrate Banned Books Week with September 29th event

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Woodward Library at Austin Peay State University, in conjunction with the American Library Association (ALA), will sponsor Banned Books Week, September 24th-October 1st.

Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of the right to access books without censorship. In some schools, classics like “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “The Catcher in the Rye” and “To Kill a Mocking Bird” may not be included in curriculum or available in the school library due to challenges made by parents or administrators.
