APSU Art Exhibit Examines World in Economic Turmoil

Clarksville, TN – As stories about the shaky economy continue to surface, arts communities across the country have braced for the worst amidst rumors of budget cuts and timid funders. The arts themselves are vulnerable when the economy is lean because they are at times seen as an expendable luxury.

For curator Ally Reeves the words, “Let them eat cake,” attributed to an oblivious Queen Marie Antoinette, spring to mind, though with an added twist. Art itself is often mistaken for superfluous “cake,” with street-level artists and their work providing a sort of elemental “bread” to the communities they inhabit. [Read more]

New APSU Exhibit “Re-presents” Historic Paintings

Clarksville, TN – For the artist Wes Sherman, an old painting by Vincent van Gogh or George Inness isn’t simply a static work of art. Each piece is alive in the present, with modern day viewers interpreting its images to fit into the world he or she knows.

New APSU Exhibit Showcases Work of Late Local Artists Tom Malone

Clarksville, TN – Some 13 years after his untimely death, the artist and musician Tom Malone is still fondly remembered in the Clarksville community. People often speak reverently of the former Austin Peay State University art student’s prolific and inspired output of work, ranging from painting to drawing to sculpture to jewelry to designing musical instruments and handcrafted furniture.

“To me, he glowed with creativity and I could sense that he had a better existence than me because he was able to let go of what was expected of him, exist through a job as a job and live life as an artist,” local musician Syd Hedrick wrote in an essay on Malone in 1999. [Read more]

APSU Hosts 43rd Annual Student Art Exhibit

Clarksville, TN – Since 1968, the Student Art League and the Visiting Artists and Speakers Committee at Austin Peay State University have mounted a juried exhibition of student work, and this spring, the tradition continues with the 43rd Annual Student Exhibition at APSU.

The show, co-sponsored by the APSU art department and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, will open at 7:00pm, March 28th in the Trahern Gallery and will run through April 15th. The event is free and open to the public. [Read more]

APSU Senior Art Students Exhibit Work this Spring

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this month, a group of 16 young artists gathered in a classroom on the Austin Peay State University campus while a winter storm dropped two to three inches of snow outside.

Normally, this would be a cause of distraction for the students. They might be expected to gather around the window and wonder if the University was going to close (which it did moments later).

Artist Ford Examines “Small Objects” at New Exhibit at APSU

Clarksville, TN – The world, in its vast entirety, can easily be broken down into a series of small objects. Each tiny piece plays an important part in the whole, and it is those relationships that fascinate the artist John W. Ford.

“I am interested in the power of small objects, and collections of small objects, to catalyze interpretation and speculative meaning,” he said. “As an archaeologist examines a pot shard to gain insight into the individuals or groups who created the original pot, or as the paleontologist studies a fossil to comprehend ancient life in its context, my interest is to examine and present small objects for their potential to evoke aesthetic, intellectual, and/or emotional responses in the viewer.” [Read more]
