Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – This week, Austin Peay State University graduating senior Naha Gray will present her Senior Thesis exhibition, “Triple Threats,” at APSU’s Gallery 108.

Located on the first floor of the Trahern Building, the gallery will be filled with ceramics, watercolor paintings and acrylic paintings by Gray. The artist has been in two other gallery viewings at APSU, and this will be her first featured show of her own. [Read more]

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – The artist Helen Hiebert’s dazzling hand-made paper creations, from her “Peace Balloon” to an elaborate dress known as the “Mother Tree Project,” somehow evoke the lighter and calmer aspects of the natural world.

From her studio in Portland, OR, her tranquil vision has earned her a reputation as one of the country’s most renowned hand papermakers, with exhibits around the world and even an appearance on the children’s program, “Sesame Street.” [Read more]

The fanfare will be followed by professors and pages, dressed in academic regalia, addressing unsuspecting students in almost all of the University’s buildings.

These strange recollections, arising from the millions of images we are exposed to on the Internet and television, fascinate the California-based artist McLean Fahnestock, and her new exhibit, “Republic of Champions,” examines the public’s collective memory, created by our constant exposure to images in the media.

APSU Senior Art Exhibits Planned this Fall

The APSU Department of Art LogoClarksville, TN – This fall, 15 young artists at Austin Peay State University will present highly original new works during a series of free exhibits in the campus’ Trahern Building.

The students, working in a variety of media from painting to photography to ceramics, are enrolled in Austin Peay’s Senior Thesis Exhibition class, taught by assistant professor of art Paul Collins. The class requires that students present their work in a public setting in order to earn their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. [Read more]

APSU Hosts Annual Bowl-a-thon October 8th to Raise Awareness About Hunger and Food Security

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Anyone interested in creating a unique piece of art while helping out a worthy cause needs to stop by the ceramics area in the Austin Peay State University Trahern Building from 5:00pm to 9:00pm on October 8th for the annual Bowl-a-Thon event.

The purpose of the Bowl-a-Thon, hosted by APSU associate professor of ceramics Ken Shipley, is to produce a number of bowls for the Empty Bowls project. According to that organization’s website, Empty Bowls seeks “to raise money to help organizations fight hunger, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist.” [Read more]

New Exhibit Teaches APSU Students Nuts and Bolts of Hosting an Art Show

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For young artists, the grueling hours spent toiling away to create a new, original piece of artwork may actually be the easiest part of their chosen vocation. Getting someone to see and appreciate what they’ve made is the truly difficult task. That’s why Austin Peay State University adjunct art professor Mike Mitchell has added a professional practice component to the introductory sculpture class he now teaches on campus.

The students in that class, for their final project, are required to develop a viable exhibition of their work. That exhibit, “Third Dimension,” will be a unique fusion of art and music, which runs from 11:00am to 12:30pm on May 4th, in the APSU Trahern Building’s Room 104. The show, which is free and open to the public, will feature works by students in Mitchell’s class and a performance by Nashville musician Evan P. Donohue. [Read more]

New APSU Exhibit Showcases Work of Late Local Artists Tom Malone

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Some 13 years after his untimely death, the artist and musician Tom Malone is still fondly remembered in the Clarksville community. People often speak reverently of the former Austin Peay State University art student’s prolific and inspired output of work, ranging from painting to drawing to sculpture to jewelry to designing musical instruments and handcrafted furniture.

“To me, he glowed with creativity and I could sense that he had a better existence than me because he was able to let go of what was expected of him, exist through a job as a job and live life as an artist,” local musician Syd Hedrick wrote in an essay on Malone in 1999. [Read more]
