Austin Peay State University fraternity registers more than 500 students to vote

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Tau Phi Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity participated in the organization’s national program, “A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People,” in September.

During the event, the chapter registered 505 APSU students to vote in local, state and national elections.

APSU celebrates ancient languages with 9th annual Classics Day

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – Latin is very much a living language on the campus of Austin Peay State University, as Classics at APSU hosted its annual Classics Day event for area high school students.

The all-day event brought together a record 221 students from Montgomery County and Sumner County high schools for a day of activities centered on the languages of the ancient world.

APSU exhibiting art by veterans, military personnel

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – The artistic talents of Austin Peay State University military-affiliated students will be on display as part of a special exhibit, titled “Showcasing Our Veterans.”

The exhibit, now in its second year, is set for November 12th from 10:00am – 2:00pm in the APSU Morgan University Center lobby, and features works of art by APSU students and faculty who have served in the military.

APSU Choral Activities presents Fall Choral Concert, Choir Fest in October

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – This fall is shaping up to be another busy semester for Austin Peay State University Choral Activities, as current APSU students will display their talents, while hundreds of young music students from across the state will get a chance to experience what the University has to offer.

At 7:30pm on October 22nd, the Clarksville community will get their first chance this year to hear the University’s talented group of singers with a concert at the campus’ George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall. The Fall Choral Concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature both choral groups performing an eclectic array of music, as well as a choral union performance of both groups. New APSU scholarship to help East Tennessee students become Special Education teachers

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – Students from Scott and Blount counties interested in becoming special education teachers are eligible for a new scholarship at Austin Peay State University, thanks to a recent gift from an anonymous donor.

The East Tennessee donor will give APSU’s Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education (MDECOE) $50,000 over the next five years for its Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM) scholarship initiative. [Read more]

APSU hosting screening of sexual assault documentary on September 24th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – At 6:00pm on Thursday, September 24th, Austin Peay State University will host a screening and panel discussion on the documentary “The Hunting Ground” in the Clement Auditorium.

The film, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, examines sexual assaults on college campuses and how college administrators ignored or failed to appropriately respond to these serious allegations.

Academic Support Center at APSU’s Martin Golson earns Level 4 certification from National College Learning Center Association

And it is with that in mind that the Center’s director, Martin Golson, was recently honored for his excellence in helping students succeed in the classroom.

Golson was recently honored as a Certified Learning Center Professional – Level 4 by the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA), a national organization that supports learning center professionals in developing and enhancing their efforts at the post-secondary level.

“What Women Wore,” a new exhibit on American women’s fashion to open at APSU

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Fashion has always been one of the ways a society leaves its mark on history. From fabric and colors emphasizing social standing to design that highlighted society’s ideals of sexuality, a great deal of knowledge can be gained by studying the fashion of the time.

“Our goal (at Austin Peay State University) is to inspire our incoming freshman students and show them that history can be interesting and relevant,” APSU adjunct professor Deanna Carter said. “And after discovering a collection of period women’s clothing, we all decided that the pieces were a fantastic way to teach students about the social status and experiences of American women.”

APSU students present Veterans Treatment Court with unique Goldsmith Press creation

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – “I know I have a long ways to go and a lot to learn, but the help is definitely here.”

When the United States and its allies need help, our soldiers answer the call. But when those same men and women need a hand, programs like the Montgomery County Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) exist to make sure they are not alone.

Established in 2012, the court aims to help veterans who come to the criminal justice system as a result of drug addictions, homelessness and other situations brought on by wartime stress.

APSU to launch pilot program focused on improving experience for autistic college students

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – As more attention is given to those diagnosed with autism, young people and their families are receiving the help they need. Social skills like communication, making friends and independence are developed as autistic children go through their formative years.

But what happens to those children when they become young adults? Autism does not end at a certain age, and many of those diagnosed have the same dreams of higher education as their peers.
