Clarksville, TN – Once again William Bennett has chosen Austin Peay State University (APSU) as the site of his Summer Flute Academy—his only master class offered in the U.S.
An Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his distinguished services to music, every summer Bennett, one of Britain’s greatest flautists, leaves overcast England to spend a week in the humid air hovering around Clarksville Tennessee.

Clarksville, TN – At 7:00pm on Thursday, October 8th, 2015, Cheryl Ann Sanders will present an evening of works in the Austin Peay State University Trahern Theatre, titled “Cirque du Jeu Physique.” Sanders, a conservatory-trained musical theatre artist, has cultivated her career as an equity artist-turned cirque star.
Sanders is currently a lead artist at Downtown Disney’s “La Nouba” in Orlando, Florida.
Comedy legends The Second City to return to APSU with new show

Clarksville, TN – At 7:30pm on Saturday, September 5th, Chicago’s famed sketch and improv comedy theater, The Second City, will return to Austin Peay State University’s Trahern Theatre with “The Second City: Fully Loaded.”
This new show will feature classic material made famous by Second City stars like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell, as well as brand new scenes, songs and improv from the theater’s sold-out shows in Chicago and Toronto.

Famed musicologist Celenza to visit APSU November 12th-17th as Acuff Chair of Excellence

Clarksville, TN – In 1772, the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn decided to play a little trick on his benefactor, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. Haydn and the court orchestra had spent months with the overbearing prince at his summer palace, and they were beginning to feel homesick for their families.
That summer, Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in F-Sharp minor, known as the “Farewell Symphony,” for the prince.

Clarksville, TN – When Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto first premiered in Prague in October 1791, the famed piece sounded much different than what audiences often hear today.
The composer’s friend, Anton Stadler, used a basset clarinet in that first performance, but the instrument fell out of favor in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Modern performances of the work are simply faint echoes of the how the piece was originally conceived.

Clarksville, TN – In March of 2011, an obituary appeared in the New York Times announcing the death of the great American composer Lee Hoiby at the age of 85.
The article championed his career, mentioning such notable works as his 1964 opera “Natalia Petrovna,” but for those who knew Hoiby, his death left something unfinished – an unperformed flute concerto he wrote 17 years earlier.

Clarksville, TN – In his later years, the renowned American composer Lee Hoiby was a quiet, slender gentleman with wavy gray hair and intelligent, often amused eyes. His appearance suited his style of music, which was reminiscent of the pleasing tunes of the early Romantic era and of his idol, Franz Schubert.
“His music is beautiful,” Gregory Wolynec, Austin Peay State University associate professor of music, said. “When we think of contemporary music, we frequently think of things that can be difficult for audiences to approach. But Lee Hoiby considered himself the caretaker of an heirloomed garden that started back with Mozart and Haydn, and even earlier than that.”
