Clarksville, TN – The United States Colored Troops Living History Association’s annual national meeting will be October 19th-21st in Clarksville, TN at Riverview Inn, 50 College Street.
The United States Colored Troops Living History Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote and accurately interpret the history of the United States Colored Troops of the American Civil War and those that supported their efforts to abolish slavery and preserve the Union and to educate the public and promote research of the history and legacy of those who served in the Civil War. APSU History Honor Society wins fourth Best Chapter of the Year

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this week, Austin Peay State University associate professor of history Dr. Minoa Uffelman asked if there was such a word as “four-peat.” She knows the word “repeat” well.
That’s what the University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society did back in 2010 when they were named the Nation’s Best Chapter for the second year in a row. In 2011, she used the word “three-peat” because the PAT club she advises was again singled out as the top chapter in the nation. [Read more]
APSU History Honor Society publishes second issue of scholarly journal

Clarksville, TN – On Tuesday morning, members of Austin Peay State University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society crowded into APSU President Tim Hall’s office to present him with a small, red booklet.
After flipping through a few pages, Hall looked around at the history students and faculty members surrounding him and said, “Congratulations to you all. This is fantastic. We’re so proud of what you’re doing.”

APSU History Honor Students Create New Scholarly Journal

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Montgomery didn’t get much sleep this past semester. Aside from the normal stresses of a graduating college senior, the Austin Peay State University history student was plagued with images of misspelled words and incorrectly used commas during many sleepless nights. When she thought about scholarly citations and the proper use of the Chicago Manual of Style, she nearly went into a panic.
That’s because Montgomery, a member of the University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society, took on an enormous responsibility during her final semester at APSU. She was appointed to serve as the editor-in-chief of the first scholarly history journal in Austin Peay’s history.

APSU Professor to Discuss Israel and Counterterrorism at Public Lecture

Austin Peay State University assistant professor of history Dr. Christos Frentzos will deliver a public lecture on Israel and counterterrorism at 4:00pm, September 30th, in the campus’ Gentry Auditorium, located in the Kimbrough Building.
The lecture, sponsored by the APSU Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, will focus on Frentzos’ experiences this summer when he spent 10 days in Israel as part of a counterterrorism fellowship. [Read more]
APSU History Club Named Best Chapter of the Year for a Second Time

Shortly after APSU’s Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society won “Best Chapter” in the nation last year, the University hosted an unrelated celebration marking its record enrollment of 10,188 students. For the history professors and students standing in the Morgan University Center Plaza that day, the event was bittersweet.
“I knew it was good for the University, but I knew it would be harder for us to win best chapter again,” Dr. Minoa Uffelman, assistant professor of history and club adviser, said.
The National PAT is split into different divisions, representing different sized schools. Last year, APSU won “Best Chapter of 2009” for Division III, which accounted for schools with 10,000 students or less. The new enrollment numbers put the chapter in a different division against larger universities. [Read more]
