Local community choir looking for new members for Spring Season

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Nell Rayburn, chair of the Austin Peay State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics, had to calculate the odds first. What were the chances that someone might identify her voice while she sang? If she stepped on stage for a solo performance, the odds were pretty good. That’s not at all what she wanted.
“I like to hang out with people who have talent,” she said. “I like to be surrounded by a big soprano section.”
So, when Rayburn decided to pursue her lifelong passion of singing, her mathematical background told her she’d be more comfortable in a large group. That’s why she joined the Clarksville Community Choir, a musical ensemble made up of area residents from different backgrounds and professions. [Read more]
Several APSU faculty, staff noted for recent activities

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University share their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Chris Burawa, director of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, had an article, titled “An Interview with Afaa Michael Weaver,” published in the Summer 2011 edition of Contemporary Literature. The article also was written by Cynthia Hogue and Stacey Waite. Burawa also will have a poem, “Dripping Surgery,” to appear in the October 2011 edition of Hayden’s Ferry Review. [Read more]
Wild ginger across Eastern U.S. Focus of next session of APSU Provost Lecture Series

Clarksville, TN – Wild ginger is one of the most common wildflower species found in the moist forests of eastern North America, where it often carpets forest floors with its distinctive kidney-shaped leaves and small brownish-maroon flowers.
In the past, botanists recognized three different species of wild ginger but today all recognize just one species, Asarum canadense. This topic will be the focus of the next session of the Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.

APSU’s Woodward Library selected for traveling exhibition

Clarksville, TN – The Felix G. Woodward Library at Austin Peay State University has been selected as one of 200 libraries in the U.S. to host a traveling panel exhibition created and funded by the National Constitution Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Library Association.
Using the U.S. Constitution as its cohesive thread, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” offers a fresh and innovative perspective on the Civil War that brings into focus the constitutional crises at the heart of this great conflict. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Faculty, staff and students at Austin Peay State University recently achieved various accomplishments for various professional and scholarly work.
Mike Wilson, director of the GIS Center at APSU, and Doug Catellier, GIS analyst, showcased the center’s Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Expo in Washington, D.C. They also met with various congressional aides as well as officials from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to discuss their project. [Read more]

Dr. Najmul Abedin, professor of public management, was designated Highly Commended Award Winner by the Emerald Group Publishing Limited in England for his article, titled “The ombudsman in developing democracies: The commonwealth Caribbean experience” published in the 2010 edition of International Journal of Public Sector Management. Final Provost Lecture Series at APSU to focus on environmental estrogen

Clarksville, TN – The final Provost Lecture Series of the 2010-11 academic year at Austin Peay State University will focus on the dangers of environmental estrogens that make humans more susceptible to a variety of health issues.
Dr. Meagan Mann, assistant professor of chemistry, will speak at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 28th in the Morgan University Center, Room 103 B. The event is free and open to the public.
