Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series looks at open Textbooks in Digital World

Clarksville, TN – Within the last decade, there has been a movement toward open textbooks as the digital world makes sharing content not only simple but common sense.
Ellen Smyth, instructor of mathematics at Austin Peay State University, said although sharing content is only a click away, the question goes from “Why would we share?” to “Why would we not share?”
“And that is without any external pressure,” she said. “Leaders of the open education movement are now calling for external pressure – a handful of national policies that could change the face of education forever and, in my opinion, for the better.” [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University have been recognized for their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Sherry Kendrick, technical clerk in the Office of the Registrar, received the PeayFormance Customer Service Award. The Enrollment Management and Academic Support will present the award quarterly to a professional or clerical staff member nominated by his or her peers as exemplifying service above and beyond the call of duty to APSU students, faculty and the general campus community. APSU Provost Lecture Series looks at program to improve stride in older adults

Clarksville, TN – Falls and fall-related injuries are common in adults older than 65. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the fall-related deaths that occurred in 2008, 82 percent of them were in adults 65 and older.
A more alarming fact than this is that older age groups sustain more fall-related injuries than younger age groups. In other words, adults older than 85 are more likely to sustain a fall, compared with those who are 65-74 years old.

Two Austin Peay State University faculty members announce recent activities

Clarksville, TN – Two faculty members at Austin Peay State University announce their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Dr. Thomas King, professor of music, will receive the prestigious Signature Sinfonian Award from Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity at a special ceremony on Saturday, November 19th at APSU. Only seven men in the nation will receive this award this year. He has been a member of Phi Mu Alpha for 46 years, having served chapters in Kansas, Mississippi and Tennessee, specifically at APSU for more than 20 years. [Read more]
APSU Provost Lecture Series explores adoptive, foster parenting as next topic

Clarksville, TN – Popular rhetoric often promotes the idea that to foster or adopt a child, “all you need is love.”
“In actuality, adoptive and foster parents need much more than love,” said Dr. Katherin Flower, assistant professor of sociology at Austin Peay State University. “In fact, there are no uniform criteria for becoming foster or adoptive parents.
Instead, a complex set of federal, state and local policies as well as agency specific mandates establish the criteria for approving parents.” [Read more]
Tangled taxonomy next topic of APSU Provost Lecture Series

Clarksville, TN – Clarifying a tangled taxonomy for a genus is the focus of the next Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.
Dr. Dan Frederick, professor of geology and geography, will present “The Foraminiferal Genus Lenticulina: Revising a tangled taxonomy” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, November 3rd in the Morgan University Center, Room 307.

Clarksville, TN – Biological invasions have been attracting more attention in recent years. However, invasive species are not a new problem; historically, they have been transported to different geographical locations around the globe.

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University announce their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Dr. Edward Wayne Chester, professor emeritus in the department of biology and the Center of Excellence for Field Biology, was presented the Conservation Award for 2011 at the annual meeting of the Tennessee Native Plant Society in September.
The award is given yearly to a person who has long advocated and supported the conservation and stewardship of Tennessee’s natural resources, especially native plants. Chester taught various biology and botany classes, conducted research and published numerous papers on the plant life of Tennessee and the southeast for more than 40 years. He currently teaches adjunct classes in biology and continues his research and writing. [Read more]
Choral music of Alfreds Feils focus of next session in the APSU Provost Lecture Series

Clarksville, TN – Alfreds Feils is a composer with whom many musicians are not familiar.
Feils, a Latvian choral conductor, composed music that is largely unknown both inside and outside of Latvia. This topic will be the focus of the next session of the Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.
