11 APSU, Middle College students named Peay Read essay winners

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Ten Austin Peay State University first-year students and a Middle College student were recognized for having best student essays on themes from “The Soloist,” a nonfiction book by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez and the basis for the movie, “The Soloist.”

The students were lauded for their winning entries during a dinner held September 29th at APSU that featured Lopez, who later that evening delivered a public talk to approximately 1,000 people in the APSU Dunn Center.

APSU P.E. Majors help disabled with sports, fitness skills

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Service learning in the classrooms is gaining acceptance in higher education as a way for students to help the community using the knowledge learned. One class is doing just that this semester.

For 30 minutes every Friday in the Dunn Center, students in the adaptive physical education course teach basic sports and fitness skills such as throwing and catching to clients of varying disabilities in the Progressive Directions Inc. program, which provides mental retardation services in Montgomery and Stewart counties.

L.A. Times columnist, author of ‘The Soloist’ to speak September 29th in APSU Dunn Center

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In 2005, Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez strikes an unlikely friendship with Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless musician with schizophrenia who slept each night on one of skid row’s most dangerous streets.

Lopez learned Ayers had been a promising violinist, and that he had left the prestigious music program at the Juilliard School because of his struggle with mental illness. The journalist chronicled Ayers’ struggle in several columns at the Los Angeles Times, inspiring readers to send instruments to Ayers through Lopez. [Read more]

Riverside Drive Lane Closures for Riverfest & Park Information

Riverfest 2011Clarksville, TN – Lanes of Riverside Drive will be closed at various times for Riverfest, beginning September 8th and continuing through September 10th.

APSU alumna who now is president at Columbia State to speak at Commencement

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University alumna who has served at the helm of two community colleges in the last 11 years will be the keynote speaker at APSU’s 82nd Spring Commencement.

Dr. Janet F. Smith (’69, ‘71), president of Columbia State Community College, will speak at both commencement events, with the first beginning at 10:00am and the second at 2:00pm, Friday, May 6th. Both ceremonies will be held in the Dunn Center.

American Floyd to rock the Dunn Center

American Floyd, a Pink Floyd tribute band will be performing at the Austin Peay State University Dunn Center Saturday, May 15th at 7:00 pm. Tickets at $15 each and are available at the door which open at 6:00 pm. The Dunn Center is located at 320 Drane Street. Parking is free with handicap access. Additional parking is located across Drane Street, behind the Armory, in the Armory lot.

Pink Floyd, an English rock band, initially earned recognition for their psychedelic and space rock music, and later, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. [Read more]

“Fly” Williams jersey to be retired at APSU

flywilliamsThe greatest basketball player in Austin Peay State University history finally will have his jersey retired.

James “Fly” Williams, one of the legendary players in Ohio Valley Conference history whose early 1970s flamboyant style literally was responsible for packing gymnasiums almost everywhere he played, will see his jersey retired this Thursday at halftime of the Austin Peay-UT Martin game. The 8 p.m. contest will be televised by ESPNU.

Williams starred at Austin Peay during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons, literally helping put the Governors basketball program on the map. He helped lead the Governors to a 22-7 record in 1972-73 and APSU’s first-ever Division I NCAA tournament appearance that included a 77-75 win against Jacksonville and a controversial 106-100 overtime loss to Kentucky.
