APSU to host 2015 American Dance Association South Region Conference

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance will host the 2015 American College Dance Association South Region Conference from March 6th-9th, 2015.
About 400 conference participants are expected to attend this year’s event at APSU, which will feature dance classes, workshops, panel discussions and dance performances.
APSU to host ninth annual Spring Dance Concert

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance and Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts’ ninth annual Spring Dance Concert is returning this month, giving students and faculty the opportunity to present their work to the Clarksville community.
The concert is scheduled for five performances: 7:30pm, Wednesday, February 18th; 7:30pm, Thursday, February 19th; 7:30pm, Friday, February 20th; 7:30pm, Saturday, February 21st; and 2:00pm, Sunday, February 22nd. Austin Peay State University adds new Department of Theatre and Dance degrees in 2015

Clarksville, TN – For decades, students studying theatre or dance at Austin Peay State University graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. This wasn’t a typo.
The University’s theatre and dance program was a concentration within the APSU Department of Communication, which sometimes made things a little confusing for graduates applying for jobs.

Austin Peay Department of Theatre and Dance to put on new show “Broadway on the Cumberland” November 20th-23rd

Clarksville, TN – Next fall, the Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance will offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in musical theatre. That means some of the glamour and energy of the big New York shows will begin trickling into the University’s Trahern Theater.
Later this month, the department will offer a sneak peak of that program with its new show, “Broadway on the Cumberland.”

Clarksville, TN – Patrons of the arts at Austin Peay State University joined creators of art at a festive celebration at F&M Bank’s Franklin Room in downtown Clarksville last week.
The annual Soiree on Franklin, in its fifth year and sponsored by the Acuff Circle of Excellence board of directors, featured representations of all of APSU’s arts disciplines: music, dance and theatre, creative writing and the visual arts. This year’s theme, “Coming Home to the Arts,” was chosen to tie into the University’s Homecoming Week.

APSU Theatre and Dance to present “Book of Days” October 1st-5th

Clarksville, TN – Walt Bates owned the local cheese factory in Dublin, Missouri, and before he died, he dreamed of producing a gourmet product, like Stilton or Brie.
But that dream begins to reek following Bates’ mysterious death in Pulitzer Prize-winner Lanford Wilson’s hilarious 2000 play, “Book of Days,” which opens this October in the Austin Peay State University Trahern Theater.
Ausitn Peay State University Theatre and Dance to present Tony-winning “RED” August 25th-26th

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance will kick off its 2014-15 season at 7:30pm on August 25th and August 26th in the Trahern Theater with John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play “RED.”
The play, directed by APSU Assistant Professor of Theatre Noel Rennerfeldt, tells the story of famed American painter Mark Rothko and his struggle between artistic integrity and commercialism while painting murals for the Four Seasons restaurant. [Read more]
Austin Peay Department of Theatre and Dance closes season with “Dark of the Moon”

Clarksville, TN – Long before the “Twilight” saga or “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” examined the complicated relationships between mortals and monsters, there was the story of a young witch named John who fell in love with a human girl named Barbara.
Their doomed affair, set in a superstitious community in the Smokey Mountains, is the focus of Howard Richardson and William Berney’s 1945 play “Dark of the Moon.”
APSU’s Darren V. Michael presents Original Short Plays in “Brief Encounters” at Clarksville’s Roxy Regional Theatre, March 19th-21st

Clarksville, TN – A jaded Hank Williams Jr. fan, a man basking in the glow of the morning after, a Middle Eastern immigrant seeking a room to rent, a middle-aged man with a fear of spiders and dentists — these are just a handful of the various characters who will take the stage of the Roxy Regional Theatre’s theotherspace this month.
For three nights only, beginning March 19th, four original one-acts by area playwright Darren V. Michael will be treated to a readers theatre production in “Brief Encounters: A Night of Short Plays”.
APSU hosts 8th Annual Spring Dance Concert

Clarksville, TN – Last fall, Marcus Hayes, Austin Peay State University associate professor of dance, traveled to Colombia to study that country’s folk dances. He spent a week in the South American nation, traveling to museums and dance centers, and he was struck to discover that many of the dances had their origins in Africa.
“It went even further than I thought,” he said. “Because of the colonization of South America and the introduction of slavery, West African dance is infused in Latin American dances.”
