Clarksville, TN – Dr. Mingzhe Wang, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of music, was in New York City this summer when his cell phone started ringing. The unfamiliar number had a 931 area code, so he thought someone on campus might be trying to contact him.

“I picked it up and it was (Tennessee State Senator) Tim Barnes,” Wang recalled recently. “I thought, oh, he’s probably calling me about some re-election stuff.”

But Barnes was calling for another reason. He congratulated Wang for being one of only two musicians in the state to receive a coveted Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artists Fellowship. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University Distinguished music alumna Jeanie Darnell to give free concert September 20th

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – Internationally known soprano and Austin Peay State University alumna Jeanie Darnell is returning to her alma mater at 7:30pm on September 20th for a guest recital in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Concert Hall.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will include the complete Liederkreis, Op. 39 of Robert Schumann, several beautiful, romantic songs of Rachmaninoff and Liszt and a new song cycle by Lori Laitman, one of America’s most performed contemporary composers.

APSU’s IB5 Quintet earns third place at Calvin Smith Festival

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – Last weekend, Austin Peay State University’s IB5 Brass Quintet traveled east to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where the group placed third at the Calvin Smith Festival and Brass Quintet Competition.

The festival was held in memory of Calvin Smith, a former horn professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, who passed away last year. [Read more]

Dr. Victoria McCarthy and Dr. Robyn Hulsart, both associate professors of professional studies, won best conference paper at the May 2012 conference of The Academic Forum. The title of their paper was “A Crisis Management Plan for Ethical Misconduct and Financial Fraud.” [Read more]

The students who make up the APSU Wind Ensemble know this about their professor and conductor, so they were a bit confused when he handed out the sheet music for their next performance. The words “Star Wars” were printed at the top of the page. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In March of 2011, an obituary appeared in the New York Times announcing the death of the great American composer Lee Hoiby at the age of 85.

The article championed his career, mentioning such notable works as his 1964 opera “Natalia Petrovna,” but for those who knew Hoiby, his death left something unfinished – an unperformed flute concerto he wrote 17 years earlier.

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – One afternoon in the late 1880s, according to a popular legend, the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky met with the man he considered a “mediocre composer” – Johannes Brahms. The topic of their conversation quickly turned to music.

“I can only write something that is beautiful,” Tchaikovsky is rumored to have pompously said.

“I can only write something that is perfect,” Brahms replied. [Read more]
