Provost Lecture Series at APSU to explore stage fright

Clarksville, TN – The next Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University will explore performance anxiety/stage fright as a nemesis in the lives of some professors and students.
Dr. Thomas King, professor of music, will present “Weak Knees? Sweaty Palms? The Anxiety Doctor Can Help” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, February 10th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The event is free and open to the public.
In 1988, King joined the APSU Department of Music as assistant professor in voice and opera. He has degrees from the University of Kansas, Indiana University and University of Mississippi, as well as a performer’s certificate in opera from the Mozarteum Music Conservatory in Salzburg, Austria. Celebrate Holidays at APSU with “Vienna in Clarksville” Concert on December 5th

Clarksville, TN – One of the great traditions in all of music is the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert. For more than 100 years, the renowned orchestra has performed uplifting holiday pieces on that day by Johann Strauss and his family, with the concert being televised in America in recent years.
But the New Year’s holiday is still several weeks away. So Dr. Gregory Wolynec, associate professor of music at Austin Peay State University, is bringing the festivities to town a little earlier with the APSU Symphony Orchestra’s second annual “Vienna in Clarksville: A Holiday Celebration” concert. Misunderstood genius of composer Schumann explored at upcoming APSU concert

Clarksville, TN – In the late winter of 1854, German composer Robert Schumann entered an insane asylum, which abruptly ended his creative career. He died two years later, and critics often cited his late works as being erratic and incomprehensible.
“People think he went mad, therefore there’s no value in his later music and that it’s full of mistakes or lack of creative inspiration,” Ming Wang, assistant professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. “I had the same opinion toward Schumann when I was a student.”
But about five years ago, under the influence of his music professors at Yale, Wang began an intensive study of the composer. Within a few years, his opinion drastically changed. [Read more]
APSU’s Yates to Give Guitar Recital October 5th

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University guitar professor Dr. Stanley Yates will perform a faculty recital at 7:30pm, October 5th, in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The APSU Summer Guitar Workshop starts Monday
June 27, 2010
Four days of free concerts each night, and a Gala musical event on Friday.
Austin Peay State University will host a five-day Guitar Workshop from June 28th-July 2nd, directed by APSU professor of music Dr. Stanley Yates.
The workshop will feature an outstanding artist-faculty roster that includes Stephen Aron (guitar professor, Oberlin Conservatory of Music and University of Akron), Mir Ali (virtuoso classical guitarist), Roger Hudson (APSU adjunct guitar faculty and Fingerstyle Magazine columnist) and the Huston-Todd Duo, along with virtuoso fingerstyle guitarists Richard Smith and Tim Thompson – both former national fingerstyle champions.
The intensive five-day workshop is open to classical and fingerstyle guitarists of all ages and playing levels and will include daily technique sessions, ensemble (group) rehearsals, master classes, lectures and evening concerts.
Jazz Festival takes the stage at APSU

The Austin Peay State University Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts present the 2009 Mid-South Jazz Festival.

The festival begins with a performance by the John Proulx Trio at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 3 and concludes at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 4, with performances by the APSU Jazz Combo, the APSU Jazz Collegians and guest artist, Jim Ferguson.
The festival will take place in the Music/Mass Communications Building Concert Hall. Tickets for the John Proulx Trio concert on Friday cost $25 for adults, $12 for students.
