Austin Peay State University math students and faculty perform well at Annual Conference

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Five Austin Peay State University faculty members and four students presented at the Middle Tennessee Mathematics’ Teachers annual conference on February 3rd-4th at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood Tennessee. More than 240 in-service and pre-service teachers attended the two-day event.

Ashley Whitehead presented “Problem Solving and Modeling with Fractions.” She also presented “Student Teaching: the good, the bad, and the ugly” with Dr. Ann Assad, APSU associate professor of mathematics. Additionally, Assad presented “Early Experiences in Problem Solving through Connections.” [Read more]

Austin Peay State University to break ground on new Math and Computer Science Facility in Fall 2012

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has announced it will break ground on a new mathematics and computer science building in Fall 2012 on the main campus.

The new $6.7 million facility, designed by Rufus Johnson Associates in Clarksville, will be located on Eighth Street, directly behind the Hemlock Semiconductor Building. The two-story building is projected to open in the spring of 2014.

Local community choir looking for new members for Spring Season

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Nell Rayburn, chair of the Austin Peay State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics, had to calculate the odds first. What were the chances that someone might identify her voice while she sang? If she stepped on stage for a solo performance, the odds were pretty good. That’s not at all what she wanted.

“I like to hang out with people who have talent,” she said. “I like to be surrounded by a big soprano section.”

So, when Rayburn decided to pursue her lifelong passion of singing, her mathematical background told her she’d be more comfortable in a large group. That’s why she joined the Clarksville Community Choir, a musical ensemble made up of area residents from different backgrounds and professions. [Read more]

APSU faculty, staff, student accomplish various work

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Faculty, staff and students at Austin Peay State University recently achieved various accomplishments for various professional and scholarly work.

Mike Wilson, director of the GIS Center at APSU, and Doug Catellier, GIS analyst, showcased the center’s Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Expo in Washington, D.C. They also met with various congressional aides as well as officials from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to discuss their project. [Read more]
