APSU to graduate record 1,000-plus students May 4th

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will award degrees to 1,075 students – the largest class in APSU history – during its 83rd Spring Commencement on Friday, May 4th in the Dunn Center.
More students are graduating from APSU because of the University’s increased efforts to offer students more opportunities to finish their degrees faster. One of those opportunities is APSU’s new Winter Term, which launched in December 2011. Some of the students will be able to graduate May 4th because they took a course during Winter Term. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University announce their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Dr. Mike Gotcher, chair of the APSU Department of Communication, Dr. Anna Filippo, assistant professor of communication, Tracy Nichols, communication instructor, and Dr. Melony Shemberger, assistant director of communication in the APSU Public Relations Office, judged various individual events and debate rounds at the Northeast High School Speech and Debate Tournament held February 4th at the school in Clarksville. WAPX-FM 91.9 at APSU to broadcast Austin Peay Governors Basketball game against rival Murray State

Clarksville, TN – Radio station WAPX-FM at Austin Peay State University will broadcast live Lady Governors and Governors basketball in OVC action from the Dunn Center beginning Saturday, January 7th against conference foe Murray State University.
Coverage will begin at 2:45pm with the Lady Govs pre-game show featuring head coach Carrie Daniels. Tipoff for the Lady Govs is at 3:00pm.
Pre-game for the men’s contest starts at 6:45pm with tipoff at 7:00pm. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University 2011 Distinguished Professor Award recipient to address 700-plus degree candidates

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will send off 733 candidates for degrees during dual Fall Commencement ceremonies December 16th in the Dunn Center.
Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy and the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award recipient, will be the keynote speaker at both commencement events.
The faculty member who earns the Distinguished Professor Award in May serves as commencement speaker at APSU’s fall graduation.
Randall holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the university of Oklahoma. He has a B.S. in mathematics from Maryville College, a Master of Divinity in theology from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts. [Read more]
Austin Peay GovTV Channel 99 now on U-verse TV

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s GovTV Channel 99, which broadcasts public, education and government (PEG) programming for the city of Clarksville, is now carried on AT&T U-verse.
Dr. Mike Gotcher, chair of the APSU Department of Communication who oversees the operation of GovTV, said the ability to offer GovTV on an additional subscription service is “a positive feature for the APSU community and Clarksville.” [Read more]
Austin Peay State University to have annual AP Debate Forum on November 2nd

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Communication will hold its eighth annual AP Debate Forum from 6:00pm-8:00pm, Wednesday, November 2nd in the Music and Mass Communication Concert Hall. The debate is free and open to the public.
The topic for this debate is “Resolved: In order to ensure more productive citizenship, all American citizens, who have graduated high school and reached the age of 18, must immediately complete no less than two years of military service, or participate in national or international service missions.” [Read more]
APSU Students produce Monograph on City’s Public Art Pieces

Clarksville, TN – Throughout the city of Clarksville, a number of statues and other pieces commemorate the history of the local community, honor heroes and celebrate the spirit of the town.
There’s the statue of John Montgomery, for whom Montgomery County is named, located in front of City Hall, facing Strawberry Alley downtown. The legend of Wilma Rudolph, Clarksville’s most famous woman athlete who was the first female to win three gold medals in the Olympics in 1960 in Rome, Italy, is preserved in her classic crossing-the-finish-line pose at McGregor Park at the intersection of College Street and Riverside Drive. APSU alumna who now is president at Columbia State to speak at Commencement

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University alumna who has served at the helm of two community colleges in the last 11 years will be the keynote speaker at APSU’s 82nd Spring Commencement.
Dr. Janet F. Smith (’69, ‘71), president of Columbia State Community College, will speak at both commencement events, with the first beginning at 10:00am and the second at 2:00pm, Friday, May 6th. Both ceremonies will be held in the Dunn Center.

Noted Native American Scholar and Filmmaker to Speak at APSU Asanbe Symposium

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s annual Asanbe Diversity Symposium, slated for next month, will feature Native American educator, writer, filmmaker and producer Dr. Patty Loew.
At 1:00pm on Friday, April 1st, Loew will lecture in the Honors Commons on “Creation to Contemporary Conflict: Native American Origin Stories as Predictors of Modern Environmental Struggles.” At 3:00pm in the same room, there will be a showing of her documentary film, “Way of the Warrior,” followed by a 4:00pm discussion of the film.
