APSU University Department of Art presents “Sound”, an art exhibit at the Trahern Gallery

January 15, 2015

APSU Department of Art - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Inviting museum-goers to use their ears as much as their eyes is quickly gaining traction in the art community. Much like using color on a physical canvas, sound artists use the noises that exist around us to fill space and grab the attention of the listener in a way no different than a sculpture, painting or mosaic.

Students at Austin Peay State University, as well as the community at large, will have an opportunity to explore this branch of contemporary art when the APSU Department of Art presents “SOUND”, an exhibition of sound art held at the APSU Trahern Gallery from January 20th-February 6th.

November 10, 2014

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – John Edmondson Jr. served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that his favorite film is the 1965 naval war movie “In Harm’s Way.”

What does surprise people is that Edmondson is a gifted artist, and now that he is retired, he’s harnessing that talent as a student in the Austin Peay State University Department of Art. One of his recent works is a painting of John Wayne, dressed as Captain Rockwell Torrey, from “In Harm’s Way.”

APSU art students animate stories by Clarksville Academy second graders

October 26, 2014

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Earlier this week, a crowd gathered along the edges of a red carpet running through the lobby of the Austin Peay State University Trahern Building. They held up smartphone cameras and leaned over each other, trying to get a better view.

The whole thing felt a bit like an old Hollywood movie premiere, and that feeling only increased when, at 1:00pm, the doors opened and the students in Frances Traughber’s second grade class at Clarksville Academy shuffled down the carpet.

Noted comic book artist and theorist to be 2014 APSU Acuff Chair of Excellence

February 23, 2014

Acuff Chair of ExcellenceClarksville, TN – In issue No. 6 of the comic book “Superman Adventures,” the story begins with the destruction of the city of Metropolis. It’s a stark opening, but then Scott McCloud, the author of that issue, does something ingenious with the narrative. He moves backward through time, taking the Man of Steel to the source of the disaster.

“Scott McCloud has got to be just about the smartest guy in comics,” Frank Miller, author of graphic novels “300” and “The Dark Knight Returns,” said.
