New Media Artist Kanarek to Talk at APSU on November 22nd

Clarksville, TN – The new media artist Yael Kanarek spent much of her childhood in Israel, where she witnessed first hand the challenges and conflicts that arise from a multicultural and multilingual society. In that ancient land, ambiguous and contradictory narratives violently divided and sometimes bond people together.
Her experiences in Israel went on to inform her works of art, which, according to her website, “nurse the philosophical boundaries of the political and spiritual; artistic and scientific, private and universal; horizontal and vertical.” She has exhibited her work internationally, including at the prestigious 2002 Whitney Biennial in New York City. APSU hosts 16th annual Bread and Words Reading on November 23rd

Clarksville, TN – To help usher in the Thanksgiving holiday, the Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature will host the 16th annual Bread and Words Benefit to raise public awareness of hunger in the local community.
The event will start with the serving of a simple meal of soup and bread at 6:00pm, Tuesday, November 23rd in the Morgan University Center Ballroom, followed by a 7:00pm reading. A donation of $5.00 for the Salvation Army is requested at the door.

Award-winning writer Richard Bausch to read at APSU on October 28th

Misunderstood genius of composer Schumann explored at upcoming APSU concert

Clarksville, TN – In the late winter of 1854, German composer Robert Schumann entered an insane asylum, which abruptly ended his creative career. He died two years later, and critics often cited his late works as being erratic and incomprehensible.
“People think he went mad, therefore there’s no value in his later music and that it’s full of mistakes or lack of creative inspiration,” Ming Wang, assistant professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. “I had the same opinion toward Schumann when I was a student.”
But about five years ago, under the influence of his music professors at Yale, Wang began an intensive study of the composer. Within a few years, his opinion drastically changed. [Read more]
New Exhibit Comes to APSU’s TERMINAL Online Art Gallery

Clarksville, TN – In the physical world of art galleries and studios, Jody Zellen’s groundbreaking new exhibit “Lines of Life” doesn’t exist. There’s no building a person can enter to experience the Los Angeles-based artist’s commentary on the perils of war and its domination of the media over the years.
Much of that imagery has floated through the cyber world, monopolizing the thousands of news websites that populate the Web. So what better place for Zellen, a net artist, to exhibit her work than in the online world. On October 25th, “Lines of Life” will open to the world on the website TERMINALapsu.org, a space sponsored by Austin Peay State University’s Department of Art and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts to showcase and examine Internet and new media art. Ceramic Artist Rose Visits APSU for Artist Lecture Series on October 12th

Clarksville, TN – The bird, perched on the rim of a cup, was smooth, and in the right light, gave off a greenish sheen. It was beautiful, but it looked unlike any bird in existence.
That’s because the animal, in spite of all its elaborate detail, was not real. It was a work of art. The great ceramicist Peter Rose used thrown and press molded pieces of clay to create the ornate bird. At 7:00pm on October 12th, he’ll visit Austin Peay State University’s Trahern Building to give a talk about his craft as part of the APSU Artist Lecture Series. The series, sponsored by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, brings renowned artists to campus to discuss their work with students and the community. [Read more]
APSU Art Alumni Hold Art Exhibit on October 9th

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday, October 9th, Austin Peay State University will again honor the work of its talented art graduates with the Second Annual Art Alumni Homecoming Exhibition.
The show, which is part of the University’s Homecoming festivities, will be from 11:00am to 4:00pm, in the Trahern Building’s gallery. Former APSU art students will return to campus that afternoon to present innovative new works for this exhibit. [Read more]
Award-winning Ying Quartet Brings Music to Clarksville

Clarksville, TN – In the early 1990s, four highly trained classical musicians moved to a small farming town in Iowa and set up shop as the community’s resident quartet. The Ying Quartet, as the group was known, received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for the groundbreaking experiment of integrating music and creative activities into the everyday life of the town of Jesup.
Residents heard the group perform haunting and powerful classical works at schools, churches, banks and inside their own homes. They viewed the arts differently after those two years, and the experiment went on to become a model for future NEA projects.

New gallery exhibits APSU student artwork

A new exhibition of Austin Peay State University student artwork is opening this month in the University’s newest gallery space.
The U.C. Student Gallery, in an alcove on the third floor of the Morgan University Center, was developed this summer to provide APSU students with a space to show their work. The gallery will be run by the Student Art League and have shows throughout the year.
The space officially opens at 3:30pm on September 8th, with a reception for the gallery’s first exhibit, “Abstract Painting: Student Work from the Topics in Studio Arts Course.” The show runs through September 30th, with paintings by students who took APSU assistant professor of art Warren Greene’s abstract painting class this summer.

Hypocrisy explored in new Austin Peay Downtown Gallery Exhibit

The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery will present a new exhibit, “Seriously (WTF)” by Donna Stack (’96), from August 5th-28th, 2010, with an opening reception from 5:00pm-8:00pm, August 5th.
Stack will present a selection of video and installation works that explores her ongoing investigation into issues of identity, femininity and authenticity, with a selective ambit into how hypocrisy functions within these realms.
Stack received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida in 2002 and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Austin Peay State University in 1996. She is an interdisciplinary artist with an emphasis in installation, video and performance.
