APSU student Paul Watkins pursues research on hybrid of math, art

May 19, 2016

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – There are mathematicians and there are artists, and then there is the rare breed that find a way to merge two of the most seemingly disparate fields of study imaginable.

Austin Peay State University math major Paul Watkins does not resemble the “traditional” math student – with long hair and an even longer beard, Watkins looks more like the type who would be at home in an art studio.

Former APSU Art Professor Schlanger to Have Work on Display at University

August 21, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For 19 years, Gregg Schlanger sauntered across the Austin Peay State University campus wearing a blazer, an untucked shirt and a ball cap pushed back on his head. He’d stop the students, faculty and staff members who crossed his path to make a joke or tease them affectionately.

He was unassuming and relaxed, but for those who knew him, he was a deeply serious artist whose work brought light to important social issues, such as the availability of drinking water in Third World nations. Earlier this summer, Schlanger ended his long tenure at APSU as professor and interim chair of the art department in order to head up the art program at Central Washington University.

New Robertson Endowment to Fund Photography Scholarships at APSU

July 7, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In 2009, Dover resident Jim Robertson made an unprecedented phone call to Austin Peay State University. He wanted to know if the University’s art department was interested in taking his extensive collection of celebrated photography prints off his hands.

The prints included valuable pieces by such 20th century photography icons as André Kertész and Ruth Bernhard.

The donation, aside from stunning the APSU art faculty, gave the University one of the most impressive photography collections in the region.

APSU Brings Steampunk to Campus with Summer Art Class

June 9, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Several years ago, a group of science fiction and fantasy writers began developing odd visions of the future and alternate realities that looked suspiciously similar to 19th century England. Fascinated by the style of the Victorian era, these writers depicted strange, steam-powered machines in their works, thus giving rise to the “Steampunk” movement.

“It’s a bit of ‘what if we’d gone in a different direction,’ and then being wildly inventive from there,” Mike Mitchell, a local artist and Austin Peay State University adjunct art professor, said. [Read more]
