THEC Awards Veterans Reconnect Grant to APSU

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this fall, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) awarded Austin Peay State University (APSU) with a Veterans Reconnect Grant to support a new Military Pathway Pilot Project designed to help military and veteran students transition quickly and easily into college or new career fields.

Retired Lt. Gen. Ronald Bailey and retired Brig. Gen. Scott E. Brower joined APSU’s senior leadership team.
Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County to hold Pet Photo Contest for 2019 Calendar

Clarksville, TN – The Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County invites pet owners to submit pet photos and vote for winners who will make up the organization’s 2019 calendar. Deadline to enter and vote is Sunday, November 11th by 3:00pm.
Winners will be officially announced at 5:00pm the same day.

Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University (APSU) biology assistant professor Dr. Jason Malaney reflects on his undergraduate years at Eastern New Mexico University, he realizes the impact being a first-generation college student had. He didn’t see the hurdles then. He sees them now.
“In hindsight I had no idea, no concept of what financial aid was, it wasn’t even part of my lexicon, how to get scholarships even,” the Austin Peay State University assistant biology professor, said. “How that works wasn’t even a piece of information for me. The pathway didn’t exist. I had to figure it all out.”

Coast Guard veteran William Cody finds home at APSU

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) says that for William Cody, the Cold War was actually ice-cold. After joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1983, at the age of 25, he found himself aboard a polar-class icebreaker ship off the coast of Antarctica.
To keep warm, the crew drank authentic Russian vodka with bits of coal dust floating in it (they’d traded with Soviet sailors they met at the bottom of the world).

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Military Alumni Chapter and the APSU National Alumni Association hosted the Military Alumni Chapter Homecoming Dinner on Friday, October 26th, 2018. A reception was held at 5:30pm prior to the dinner.
All funds raised through ticket sales were designated to benefit the CW3 (R) Scott Schroeder Scholarship Endowment and the Mrs. Joyce Luster Scholarship Endowment for deserving APSU students.

Austin Peay music professor performs at Carnegie Hall and throughout China

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Spencer Prewitt, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of music, recently finished a whirlwind tour of China as well as an impressive performance at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City.
As a part of a long-term relationship-building project, Prewitt traveled throughout China October 8th-19th to perform, teach and promote the opportunities for international students available at APSU.

As the state’s leader in higher education for military-affiliated students, the institution traditionally recognizes the entire month, with its connection to Veterans Day, as an extended salute to all veterans and active-duty military personnel.

In previous years, the Austin Peay State University football team has worn special uniforms to honor the military.

APSU computer science student wins at Georgia Tech hackathon

Clarksville, TN – Robyn Yates is having one heck of a hacking season representing Austin Peay State University (APSU).
At the VolHacks hackathon in September at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, she and her Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) teammates won several top honors, including for the “Pi-Mail” hack she and three other team members worked on.
