Austin Peay State University has a new dean to lead its College of Business
Dr. William Rupp comes to APSU from the Stephens College of Business at the University of Montevallo in Alabama, where he had served as dean since June 2003. There, he was responsible for the college’s strategic planning, accreditation, development of evening, 2+2 and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) programs, fundraising and community service.
Prior to Montevallo, he was associate dean of the School of Business at Robert Morris University from August 1994 to June 2003.
He earned his Ph.D. in strategic management from the University of Georgia, M.B.A. in management from the University of Montana and B.A. in management from Azusa Pacific University.
Throughout his tenure in higher education, Rupp has published numerous articles in business and technology areas and is a member of the Academy of Management.
Clarksville Parks and Recreation to host free 2010 NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition
The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the local division of the 2010 NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition on September 18th at 1:00pm at Kenwood High School Football Stadium. Boys and girls compete separately in four age divisions (8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15).
All participants must launch one punt, one pass and one kick, and will be scored based on distance and accuracy (in feet). Admission to participate in the competition is free but a birth certificate is required upon registration.

Norman Smith School kicks off drive to improve students reading ability
Norman Smith School has had some issues over the last few years. Located in a high poverty area reading scores at the school have had some room for improvement. So School leaders in conjunction with the teachers and concerned parents decided that they would do something about it. It started over the summer when with the help of volunteers, the school was given a face-lift.
At the same time the teachers were getting prepared for a new strategy. A new program designed to encourage the kids to learn to enjoy reading. “We set out to build a school wide culture of literacy. We want to make reading fun and cool for our kids.” said Beth Unfried the Principle of the Norman Smith School.

The City of Clarksville’s three community centers will be closed on Monday, September 6th, 2010 in observance of Labor Day. The community centers will resume regular operating hours beginning Tuesday, September 7th, 2010.

APSU in school supply contest against MTSU until September 10th
More than just football will be taking place September 11th.
The Governors will play Middle Tennessee State University that evening at MTSU’s Floyd Stadium, but between now and September 10th, the two schools are competing to see which one can collect the most donations of school supplies for their respective county schools.
The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro and The Leaf-Chronicle in Clarksville are sponsoring the inaugural Presidents Cup trophy to honor the school with the greater campus collection of school supplies leading up to the game. [Read more]
APSU Professor to Discuss Israel and Counterterrorism at Public Lecture
Austin Peay State University assistant professor of history Dr. Christos Frentzos will deliver a public lecture on Israel and counterterrorism at 4:00pm, September 30th, in the campus’ Gentry Auditorium, located in the Kimbrough Building.
The lecture, sponsored by the APSU Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, will focus on Frentzos’ experiences this summer when he spent 10 days in Israel as part of a counterterrorism fellowship. [Read more]
Student Traffic Awareness Training (STAT)
The third Student Traffic Awareness Training class of 2010 was held on Saturday August 28th. This four hour class designed to teach teens the responsibility of driving a car and how to stay alive behind the wheel is free to all teens 15 – 18 years of age.
Kaye Jones, President of the Citizens Police Academy, talked to the class of 70 students about the driving course before they start the driving part of the class. During the driving part of the class each student drives a course twice on a golf cart. First time around the course the students drive the golf cart with DUI Goggles on.

Pastor Freeman of Greater Missionary Baptist Chuch awarded the Community Spirit of Excellence Award
On Sunday, the Clarksville Convenient Shopper Magazine along with several other area businesses honored Pastor Willie J. Freeman of Greater Missionary Baptist Church with a “Community Spirit of Excellence Award.” Treva Gordon the CEO/Founder of Convenient Shopper Magazine and the woman behind Clarksville’s Unity Day, said, “This award is given to choice citizens who strive to make a difference in our community, demonstrates goodwill, as well as the promotion of Unity in the Community.”
