APSU will be host to elementary, middle school teachers at STEM conference

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Elementary and middle school teachers will participate in a conference that will focus on strategies for integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) principles into instruction in grades K-8.

The conference will be held Saturday, October 2nd in the Claxton Building at Austin Peay State University.

Keynote speaker will be Michael Wilson, manager of the APSU Geographical Information Systems (GIS). His talk will focus on ways K-8 students can display experimental or research data. [Read more]

“Operation Celebrate Children” to Feature National Anthem by Award-winning Artist Trace Adkins

Nashville, TN – Families of Fort Campbell soldiers on active duty will be treated on Saturday, October 2nd, to a private, free performance of Disney On Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

Fort Campbell families, who have recently seen their service members deployed for the third and fourth times, will also be treated to a national anthem performance by multiplatinum, award-winning country music star Trace Adkins.

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville was recently recognized by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation as a “Walk with Me Tennessee” community for its pedestrian friendliness. The “Walk with Me Tennessee” program strives to increase awareness of alternate transportation in order to improve the health of Tennesseans, reduce environmental impacts and help citizens save money in fuel costs.

West Creek Elementary Celebrates National Family Day with a Read-in Tonight

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemTonight is West Creek Elementary’s Kick-off for Family Reading Night. It is also National Family Day. Principal Lynne Rains said she could not think of a better way to spend Family Day than with your children reading a book. The West Creek library will be open on Family Reading nights from 4:30pm-6:30pm.

Children must be accompanied by a parent. Mrs. Rains said it is hoped that these nights will encourage students to read as they see the value placed on reading by their parents.

APSU to hold physical education program for home-schooled children

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Beginning in October, Austin Peay State University Department of Health and Human Performance will offer a six-week physical education program for home-schooled children.

Children ages 4-14 are invited to attend physical education classes taught by APSU students seeking health and physical education licensure. Children are divided into four age groups allowing four concurrent teaching stations.

Classes will be held from 1:00pm-1:45pm, Wednesdays, October 6th, 13th, 22nd and 27th and November 3rd and 10th. [Read more]

APSU freshman wins recent state pageant

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A freshman at Austin Peay State University recently was crowned Miss Tennessee Teen in the National American Miss Pageant, held September 3rd-5th in Franklin.

Sarah Gross competed with approximately 50 young women in the teen division. She had a community involvement portion worth 10 percent; personal interviews, 30 percent; personal introduction, 30 percent; and formal wear, 30 percent. [Read more]

College and Career Night Set for September 27th

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemClarksville, TN – The annual Clarksville-Montgomery County College/Career Night for current high school students and their parents will be held on Monday, September 27th, 2010 at Austin Peay’s Foy Fitness Center from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

The participating high schools include Clarksville High, CMCSS Middle College, Kenwood High, Montgomery Central High, Northeast High, Northwest High, Rossview High, and West Creek High. Students from local private schools as well as neighboring counties also are invited to attend. Last year, approximately 1,000 students and their parents were in attendance.

This is an event for current students and their parents to informally visit tables and pick up information about colleges and other post secondary institutions.

Planters Bank Nissan Cube Finalists Total Five

Planters BankClarksville, TN – Two additional finalists were selected this week for the Planters Bank 2010 Nissan Cube Giveaway. Finalist number four, Renee Hampton of Clarksville, was selected from more than 1,200 entries received at the bank’s Downtown market booth.

Hampton graduated from Montgomery Central High School in May and is an employee at the Sango Wal-Mart. As a semi-finalist, she received a $100.00 gas card from Mathews Nissan.

Candy Peters from Hopkinsville was selected as a fifth finalist from entries during the Christian County Salute Week. Peters received a $100.00 gas card from Garland Nissan in Hopkinsville.

Parks & Recreation’s 2010 NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition results

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department hosted the local division of the 2010 NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition on September 18th at Kenwood High School Football Stadium. Boys and girls competed separately in five age divisions (6-7,8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15). The following are the first-place winners of this year’s competition:

2010 NFL Punt, Pass & KickGirls

  • Ages 6-7 – Jill Casillas
  • Ages 8-9 – Mackenzie Cherry
  • Ages 12-13 – Alexis Mihalinec
  • Ages 14-15 – Kayla Mihalinec

Boys

  • Ages 8-9 – Hank Casillas
  • Ages 10-11 – Kyle Mihalinec
  • Ages 14-15 – Donovan Lakin

These first-place winners will move on to the Sectional Competition to be held October 9th at Baptist Sports Park in Nashville, Tennessee where they could qualify for the Team Championship Competition. The Team Championship Competition is to be held in conjunction with the Titans vs. Eagles game at LP Field.
