Motorcyclists donate $18,600 to Fort Campbell Fisher House

Fort Campbell Fisher HouseOak Grove, KY – Members of the Some Gave All organization, sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Mortgage Professionals, held a Motorcycle charity event to benefit the Fisher House Foundation which helps wounded soldiers and their families. Riders came from all over Kentucky to donate $18,600 to the Fort Campbell Fisher House Saturday May 21st at the War Memorial Walking Trail in Oak Grove, KY.

Members of Some Gave All raised money throughout the year and originally wrote the check for $17,000 but raised another $1,600 over the last week, bringing the total to $18,600.

The extra toe is a spontaneous genetic mutation called polydactylism. Ernest Hemingway, renowned American novelist, was known for keeping polydactyl cats at his home In Key West, Florida. Even today, ancestors of his pets stroll through the grounds of his home, now a tourist attraction. There is a foundation that cares for the cats and manages their numbers through selective spaying and neutering to ensure the continuity of this colony.

First Catie Summers Scholarship Awarded

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemClarksville, TN – Clarksville High students Alexis M. Bynum and Austin Pitts are the first two recipients of the Catie Summers Memorial Scholarship. Each will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their freshman year in college. Applicants have to be graduating seniors from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Schools who have battled cancer during their lifetime.

Recipients must have a 3.0 grade point average OR a mininum ACT score of 21 and be accept to a college or university.

Hershey Track and Field Winners Advance to District Competition

Hershey Track and FieldClarksville, TN – The annual local Hershey Track and Field Competition was held May 14th at Kenwood High School. The competition gives young athletes a chance to showcase their skills in track and field, long jump and softball throw.

The first- and second-place athletes in the local competition advanced to the District Hershey Track and Field Competition in Dickson where they are given the opportunity to advance to the State Competition in Murfreesboro. [Read more]

APSU certified as StormReady by National Weather Service

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In the last several weeks, Montgomery County has been under many flood, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings – and Austin Peay State University’s emergency team has reacted quickly to alert the campus community.

For instance, whenever tornado warnings are received, APSU sends text and email messages to students, faculty and staff, and the outdoor public address system brings weather warnings to attention.

Because of APSU’s efforts to keep the campus informed of weather situations, the National Weather Service has certified APSU as a StormReady community. [Read more]

Two local women are on their way to Alabama to offer their services

American Red CrossClarksville, TN – Rithy Essing and Lonzetta Cleveland are local volunteers with the American Red Cross Clarksville-Montgomery County Chapter and on a national Red Cross registry for disaster volunteers. This is their first week in a two-week volunteer stint providing mass care services in tornado-ravaged Alabama.

“We’re on a national register as mass care shelter specialists and when there is a major event somewhere in the United States, they contact people that are on the register and see if they’re available,” they said Monday.

Clarksville Academy announces new Head Boys Basketball Coach

Clarksville AcademyClarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school is embarking on a new athletic era. Head of Schools, Kay Drew announced Tuesday, that Matt Wallace would take over the position of Head Boys Basketball Coach.Wallace is the current Athletic Director and Head Coach of the Intermediate School boys’ basketball team. Wallace will continue to act as Athletic Director and teacher, but will add Head Varsity Coach to his duties.

Drew said, “After serving as Intermediate School Head Basketball Coach, it was a natural transition to move Coach Wallace into leading our varsity boys. Matt has been an asset to our athletic programs this year. I am delighted he has agreed to take on this new task.” [Read more]
