American Sociological Association president to speak at APSU

Clarksville, TN – The president of the American Sociological Association will be a featured speaker next week at Austin Peay State University.
Erik Olin Wright, who also serves as the Vilas Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, will speak at 4:00pm, Monday, April 16th in the McCord Building, Room 209.
Austin Peay State University communication professor receives Harold Love Award
Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University faculty member has been selected to receive the coveted 2012 Harold Love Community Service Award from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club Congratulates Northwest High School Student Ashley Rhodes, Speech Contest Winner
Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club held its 2012 Four-Way Test Speech Contest, Thursday, April 12th, on the campus of Austin Peay State University. Two high school students competed to win cash prizes and the opportunity to move forward to the Rotary District 6760 contest.
Ashley Rhoades, an 11th grade Northwest High School student, challenged 10th grade student Christian Dashcle for the esteemed prize. Both students were tutored by Northwest speech teacher Jaime Holder.

APSU alumna Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Academic Hall of Fame

Clarksville, TN – The mayor of Montgomery County, who also is an Austin Peay State University alumna, was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 191 Academic Hall of Fame.
Mayor Carolyn Bowers (’68, ’79) was inducted Tuesday, April 10th during the APSU chapter’s initiation ceremony. As part of a permanent tribute, her name will be displayed on a plaque housed in the Woodward Library on the main campus.

Three APSU students earn NSF scholarships for field study course in New Mexico

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University geosciences major Kayla Pendergrass and biology majors Megan Hart and Rob Shepard have been awarded full scholarships to attend the 22nd Annual North American Dendroecological Fieldweek (NADEF) held at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico.
These scholarships, funded by the National Science Foundation, cover the cost of tuition, room and board, equipment and laboratory consumables and transportation during the 10-day course. [Read more]
Clarksville Police Department to hold Student Traffic Awareness Training Classes for Teens
Clarksville, TN – Student Traffic Awareness Training Classes (S.T.A.T.) for high school students between the ages of 15 and 19 will be held May 5th, August 18th and October 20th, 2012. The classes are free.
The Classes will be held at the Grace Nazarene Church located at 3135 Trenton Road, Clarksville, Tennessee. Classes are from 9:00am until 1:00pm.

Dr. Najmul Abedin, professor in the public management and criminal justice department, had several articles published recently. These include “The Conceptual and Functional Diversity of the Ombudsman Institution: A Classification” published in Administration & Society; “The Ombudsman Institution and Democracy in the Bangladesh Context” in the book “Democracy in Bangladesh”; and “The Ombudsman Institution, Political Authority and Corruption” in the African Journal of Public Administration and Management. Shogun Restaurant own donates $1,000 to the Clarksville Police Department’s Youth Coalition Program
Clarksville, TN – Deok Kwon Nam, owner of Shogun Restaurant, presented the Clarksville Police Department a personal donation in the amount of $1,000 for the Clarksville Police Department’s Youth Coalition.
The CPD Youth Coalition is a unique program which works with “at risk” juvenile offenders.

Clarksville, TN – With the largest voter turnout in its history, Austin Peay State University has announced the new leaders of the Student Government Association election for the 2012-13 academic year.
A total of 1,729 students voted in the SGA election held last week. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University now an Apple Authorized Training Center for Education
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University recently became an Apple Authorized Training Center for Education (AATCE), the only one in Tennessee.
