More than 100 Austin Peay freshman students inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On Thursday, April 13th, 2017  more than 100 Austin Peay State University freshman students were inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) National Honor Society.

“This is the largest crowd I have seen at an induction in over a decade,”Dr. Steven Ryan, professor of languages and literature and ALD faculty advisor, said.

Clarksville dedicates Frank Sutton statue

Actor, soldier, humanitarian honored in hometown

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – On Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017, a statue of actor Frank “Sgt. Carter” Sutton, who was born and raised in Clarksville, was dedicated on Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville.

A crowd of more than 150 people — including a large group of third-grade students from Clarksville Academy and a busload of Coldwell Banker Realtors  —  gathered to watch Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan, statue project leader Mark Holleman, and sculptor Scott Wise pull the shroud from the bronze image.

The completed statue of Frank Sutton was unveiled at 1:30pm Wednesday near the Roxy Theatre on Franklin Street by Mark Holleman, Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan and sculptor Scott Wise.

APSU School of Nursing and county health department receive grant for breast health

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Five years ago, Dr. Patty Orr, Austin Peay State University professor of nursing, and Joey Smith, director of the Montgomery County Health Department, made an unsettling discovery.

After looking into incidents of breast cancer in this area, they discovered that the mortality rate was disproportionately higher among women from traditionally under served populations.

Dr. Kristine Nakutis named as executive director of the Austin Peay State University Center at Fort Campbell

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Dr. Kristine V. Nakutis has been hired as the executive director of the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell, effective May 15th, 2017.

A retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, Nakutis comes to Austin Peay from Jackson State Community College, where she has served as veterans affairs coordinator since 2015.

Patrons with fines on their accounts can exchange one food donation for $1.00 in eligible fines

Clarksville-Montgomery County Public LibraryClarksville, TN – From May 1st through May 14th, 2017 the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library will be accepting food donations in exchange for $1.00 of eligible fines for each item.

This year’s Food for Fines benefits Manna Café, a non-profit organization that feeds the hungry.

TBR vice chair Emily Reynolds to speak at APSU commencement on May 5th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Vice chair of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Emily Reynolds will deliver the keynote address at Austin Peay State University’s 88th Spring Commencement on May 5th in the University’s Dunn Center.

Reynolds has had an extensive career in public service and politics, having served under two U.S. senators from Tennessee—Senator Howard Baker and Senator Bill Frist. Both men also served as majority leader of the U.S. Senate.

Clarksville’s Valleybrook Park to get new Playgrounds

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Valleybrook Park, a neighborhood green space on Crossland Avenue near downtown, will be getting a $447,000 facelift thanks to a federal grant secured by the City of Clarksville.

Improvements include two new playgrounds, a new restrooms, a new pavilion, conversion of the current restrooms to an additional pavilion, and repaving of the parking lot.

3rd annual Be More Like Wade Scholarship 5k Run/Walk/Crawl set for Saturday, July 29th

Wade Morgan - Be More Like WadeCunningham, TN – On Saturday, July 30th, 2016 the 3nd annual “Be More Like Wade Scholarship” 5K Run/Walk will take place at the Montgomery Central Schools on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 in honor of Wade Morgan. Registration starts at 8:00am and the race is slated for 8:30am.

Tickets can be purchased online at ticketleap. Registration will also take place the day of the race.

All proceeds will be placed in the Scholarship Fund in Wade’s memory. Scholarships will be given to graduating Seniors at Montgomery Central High School who demonstrate similar characteristics of #bemorelikeWade.
