Austin Peay State University geosciences professors bring new geologic insights to Nevada’s high desert region
Clarksville, TN – The high desert region of Northeastern Nevada is known for its sparse, khaki-colored landscape, but if you happened to be passing through the area eight to 16 million years ago, it would have looked completely different.
“Our research indicates that Northeastern Nevada was transected by a greater than 190-kilometer-long fault zone bordering grasslands with rivers and lakes where ancient rhinoceroses, camels, and horses grazed in the shadow of a series of large, explosive volcanoes that periodically erupted voluminous hot clouds of volcanic ash that torched the landscape,” Dr. Phyllis Camilleri, Austin Peay State University professor of geology, said.

Clarksville Parks and Recreation launches “Bike Walk Clarksville”
Clarksville, TN – Bike Walk Clarksville, a group of citizens on a mission to promote a more bicycle and pedestrian-friendly community, got rolling this week with a formative meeting at Wilma Rudolph Events Center.
The next meeting is scheduled for 6:00pm Tuesday, March 13th, 2018 at a site to be announced soon. Organizers have set up online sites to inform and connect members.

The popularity of Clarksville’s BCycle bike-sharing system helped inspire the newly formed ‘Bike Walk Clarksville’ citizens group.

Austin Peay State University student Aristeo Ruiz named SEIFC Fraternity Man of the Year
Clarksville, TN – At the awards banquet during the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference (SEIFC) Annual Leadership Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, Austin Peay State University student Aristeo S. “Ari” Ruiz was named SEIFC’s Gregory R. Singleton Fraternity Man of the Year.
“This award means a lot for me because it has given me a platform to say that we all need to reignite the purpose for fraternity and sorority life and go back to the basics – our values,” Ruiz said.

The All State staff earns 10 awards at Southeast Journalism Conference
Clarksville, TN – The All State, student newspaper at Austin Peay State University, earned two first place awards in Best News Editorial Artist/Illustrator and On-site Op-ed Writing and eight additional awards from the annual Southeast Journalism Conference during on Friday, February 16th, 2018.

APSU’s Osvaldo Di Paolo Harrison publishes fifth scholarly work on Hispanic crime fiction
Clarksville, TN – In 1978, the Spanish crime novelist José García Martínez-Calín created Gay Flower, a tough private detective reminiscent of Mikey Spillane’s Mike Hammer and Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlow.
Flower’s adventures through the hardboiled underworld of 1940s Los Angeles helped revive crime fiction in Spain and Latin America, but Martínez-Calín is rarely mentioned in academic journals or invited to the genre’s many celebrated literary festivals, like Spain’s popular Semana Negra (Black Week).

Clarksville-Montgomery County School System February 2018 Points of Pride
Montgomery County, TN – Clarksville-Montgomery County School System announces that Amber Hartzler, a first grade teacher at Pisgah Elementary School, was one of 20 Tennessee educators recently designated as a National Board Certified Teacher.
Each of these accomplished educators earned the profession’s highest mark of achievement through a rigorous, performance-based, peer-review process, demonstrating their proven impact on student learning and achievement.

Pisgah Elementary School holds “Pisgah Loves Pets” food drive
Montgomery County, TN – Clarksville-Montgomery County School System says Pisgah Elementary School has one big lesson for us all – spread love and kindness!
According to organizer Leanna Sleigh, from February 6th to February 16th, 2018 students, parents, faculty, and staff collected food for animal shelters during their Pisgah Loves Pets food drive.
