Book Review: “Grace Among the Leavings” by Beverly Fisher

    By | August 18, 2013 | Print This Post

Clarksville Book ReviewClarksville, TN – “Ms. Grace, you ask hard questions.”

The little girl living on a farm in rural Sumner County, Tennessee does ask hard questions. Innocent and inquisitive, Grace lives in a world where the Civil War has just ended and the devastated South is entering Reconstruction. Grace directly questions why she is surrounded by death and suffering.

Her grandmother tells Grace, “I want you to not think of the evil in this world, honey, because there is plenty of that. You don’t have to look too hard or far for that. Look for the good. Be the good.”

Another Successful Cooling at the Cave

    By | August 2, 2011 | Print This Post

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday July 30th, the mouth of Dunbar Cave was a buzz with activity. It was time for the annual Cooling at the Cave event, sponsored by the Friends of Dunbar Cave. As the afternoon temperatures soared, the local flocked to cool down in the constant cool breeze blowing from the mouth of the cave.

The quartet, Red River Breeze, provided the entertainment of traditional Celtic music, while children danced and the adults clapped. The Friends of Dunbar Cave provided ice cold lemonade, water, cookies, granola bars, and freezer pops. Many played a variety of board games, tapping their toes to an Irish jig. Back in the days before air conditioning, this is how locals cooled off and fellowshipped with others.

Dunbar Cave’s Cooling at the Cave is Saturday July 31st

    By | July 26, 2010 | Print This Post

Transportation via golf cart between the parking lot and the cave entrance will be available for those who need it, thanks to the kindness of the Jeff Vaughn and the City of Clarksville.

With the heat index passing 100 lately, it is perfect timing for the Friends of Dunbar Cave’s annual Cooling at the Cave event. Bring your family out Saturday, July 31, from 4pm to 6pm and enjoy sitting at the mouth of the cave, which stays at 58 degrees year round.

Sitting in the shade at the mouth of the cave is how locals cooled off before the cave was a designated State Natural Area. Folks would bring tables, chairs, and board games. Some would play instruments, while others danced. This is the atmosphere the Friends of Dunbar Cave recreate every year. «Read the rest of this article»

Politics high on this writer’s book list

    By | January 7, 2009 | Print This Post

This year I read a lot of books, or least a lot of books for me.  A couple  stand out in my mind, and so I thought I would share them with you.

looming-tower1“The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11″ (2006), by Lawrence Wright

This book is tireless in its details; but do not let that discourage you from giving it a read.  The book  is rather short at 373 pages; however, it is heavily noted and very user friendly. It contains a 10 page glossary of principal characters with brief descriptions of their importance; which is a invaluable resource in helping the reader keep track of the multitude of players with similar names.

opinion-081Like most other histories of Muslim fundamentalism (such as the BBC video series “Power of Nightmares”), Wright starts with the story of Sayyid Qutb.  Qutb was an Egyptian writer and Muslim that traveled through America in the late 1940’s.  His experiences and perceptions, started the generational snowball that  led to 9/11. «Read the rest of this article»
