APSU history professor nominated for international award

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University (APSU) history professor has been nominated for one of India’s top honors.

The Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Welfare Society of India is considering the nomination of Dr. Somaditya Banerjee, assistant professor in the APSU Department of History and Philosophy, for the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman award, which recognizes non-resident Indians for outstanding service, achievement and contributions.

The award is bestowed annually to 25 overseas Indians at the House of Commons in London, England. The NRI Welfare Society has invited Banerjee to the award ceremony at the NRI World Congress at the British Parliament in mid-May.

Banerjee holds a bachelor’s degree in physics, three master’s degrees (two in physics and one in the history of science) and a doctorate in history. His research interests are in modern South Asian history and the history of science.

He’s under contract with Routledge for a book manuscript examining the making of modern physics in colonial India.

He’s the faculty adviser for Phi Alpha Theta, which recently won its 10th straight Nels A. Cleven Award for Best Chapter of the Year.
