Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist
The economic data were clouded by the effects of Hurricane Sandy and in most cases it’s impossible to isolate the storm’s impact. Retail sales fell 0.3% in October, although Sandy had both positive and negative effects. Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits jumped, similar to the increase seen after Katrina in 2005. Industrial production fell 0.4% and Federal Reserve economists estimate that Sandy shaved a full percentage point from the headline production figure. Factory output fell 0.8%, but would have been flat if not for Sandy.
Currently, the Fed is buying about $40 billion per month in Mortgage-Backed Securities as part of its Large-Scale Asset Purchase program (QE3, funded by the creation of money) and about $45 billion in long-term Treasuries through its Maturity Extension Program (“Operation Twist”, funded by selling short-term Treasuries out of its portfolio). APSU introduces My Future to work with Degree Compass
Clarksville, TN – This week and next, students at Austin Peay State University are registering for their spring semester courses, and many of them are using the Degree Compass course recommendation tool to help them decide which courses to take.
Now, there is another computerized planning tool that works with Degree Compass. Called My Future, the new program suggests which majors are the best fit for each student’s academic talents. [Read more]
APSU 1000 class raises money to help Child Learning Center improve playground

Clarksville, TN – When freshmen and new students begin their academic careers at Austin Peay State University, they take a course known as APSU 1000 to learn more about the University, their majors and resources on campus.
One APSU 1000 class, though, decided to take their classroom experience to another level. On Wednesday, November 14th, the students presented a $320.00 check to the APSU Child Learning Center (CLC) for playground improvements.

“Handmade Holidays” event continues Sunday, November 18th
Clarksville, TN – The Wilma Rudolph Event Center, located at Liberty Park, is excited to host its first-ever holiday event, known as “Handmade Holidays- a Crafters Bazaar”, featuring holiday-themed handmade and handcrafted items.
The event continues Sunday, November 18th, 2012 from noon to 5:00pm.

Clarksville Community Centers to close temporarily for annual maintenance
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Parks and Recreation would like to remind citizens that each of the three community centers will be closing temporarily to conduct their annual maintenance period.
The Crow Community Center, located at 211 Richview Road, will be closed December 3rd-9th. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University GIS Center develops app for Clarksville Academy
Clarksville, TN – Earlier this year, officials with Clarksville Academy brainstormed ways to improve communication with parents, current students and prospective students. They decided to create iCougar, an app for the Apple iPad and iPhone.
The idea was to make it a centralized digital location for information on the school, but then came the next question – how do you create an app?

APSU journal on Hispanic literature, Polifonía, included in Cervantes Institute’s database

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this semester, Austin Peay State University’s Department of Languages and Literature released the first print edition of Polifonía, a Spanish language scholarly journal that caters to Hispanic literature.
“The whole intention (of the journal) was to get our name out,” Dr. Osvaldo DiPaolo, APSU assistant professor of Spanish and journal editor, said at the time. “It makes us look better from the outside, and it can bring potential students who are interested.”
