APSU to hold August 31st symposium, ‘Economic Terrorism’

The FOMC Minutes from the July 31st/August 1st policy meeting showed that Fed officials were worried about the deceleration in economic growth. “Many members judged that additional monetary accommodation would likely be warranted fairly soon unless incoming information pointed to a substantial and sustainable strengthening in the pace of the economic recovery.” However, “several members noted the benefits of accumulating further information that could help clarify the contours of the outlook for economic activity and inflation as well as the need for further policy action.”
Meeting participants discussed three policy options: extending the forward guidance (the length of time which the Fed expects to keep short-term rate exceptionally low), undertaking another round of asset purchases, and lowering the interest rate the Fed pays on excess bank reserves. Extending the forward guidance appeared to have the least amount of internal resistance, but additional asset purchases had some support. [Read more]
USS LST 325 to dock at McGregor Park for Tours September 26th-30th
Clarksville, TN – On September 26th-30th a key piece of military history will be on the banks of the Cumberland River in Clarksville, TN. Join us at McGregor Park as we welcome the LST-325. The LST crew will provide a rare glimpse into this floating monument as visitors are able to climb aboard and explore the ship.
Military enthusiasts, history buffs, and school groups will learn how it was instrumental in battles dating back to WWII.
APSU’s Goldsmith Press has several exhibits planned for this Fall

Clarksville, TN – For the last 15 years, the Goldsmith Press & Rare Type Collection at Austin Peay State University has helped preserve the great American tradition of letterpress printing. Students and community members are invited to use the collection’s hand-carved wood letters and antique printing presses to created broadsides and prints that express their personal opinions about contemporary issues. Riverfest Riverside Drive Lane Closures and Park Information
Clarksville, TN – There will be lane closures on Riverside Drive for Riverfest beginning September 6th continuing through September 9th. Traffic will be slower moving than usual during this time period, so we recommend drivers plan alternate routes or give themselves plenty of time to travel to their destination.
McGregor Park will be closed to the public on Wednesday, September 5th at daybreak in preparation for the festival. No admission will be charged to enter the park during the festival on September 7th and 8th. [Read more]
Manna Café Ministries “Block Party” a hit with the Community
Clarksville, TN – Manna Cafe Ministries is about feeding, loving and nurturing the poor and homeless. This past Saturday, they held a “Block Party” for the New Providence community at the Vacation Motel located at 650 Providence Boulevard from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.
There was a live DJ supplying the tunes and volunteers helping with the carnival games and serving the food. It was estimated that over 400 people came by to enjoy the fun.
A Good Time was had at the Taste of Shiloh Saturday
Palmyra, TN – The Taste of Shiloh event opened Saturday, August 25th, 2012, at the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall with an overwhelming display of pinwheel appetizers, chicken stuffing with giblet gravy, barbecue, enchiladas, and double ricotta lasagna entrees, followed by gingerbread berry shortcake, caramel pie, and double chocolate cookies for dessert.
Two long counters were filled with too many foods to list.
APSU to receive Green Certification from the City of Clarksville and Montgomery County on September 10th
Clarksville, TN – In the last several years, Austin Peay State University has worked steadily to become a more environmentally friendly institution. A sustainable campus fee was developed in 2008 to fund green initiatives, such as recycling projects, energy and water conservation and the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles.
The University has also added solar panels at the APSU Environmental Education Center, installed Brita Hydration Stations to the residence halls and put in better irrigation systems for landscaping in certain areas of campus. [Read more]
Custom House Museum September 2012 Exhibits and Activities
Clarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.
In the month of July, the Museum will feature The Amazing Maze, Inspirations and Origins, Subtle Manipulations: The Vision of Greg Sand, Let’s Find: Benches and Chairs and so much more.
Austin Peay State University Faculty Members recognized for their years of service
Clarksville, TN – Many faculty at Austin Peay State University were recognized Wednesday, August 22nd for their years of service to the University.
Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy, has been a fixture on the APSU faculty for 40 years, joining APSU when there was a separate department of philosophy.
He received the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association’s Distinguished Professor Award.
