APSU Wind Ensemble concert to include performance of “Star Wars” film score
Austin Peay State University
Clarksville, TN – Dr. Gregory Wolynec’s taste in classical music can at times be described as a bit esoteric. The Austin Peay State University associate professor of music enjoys seeking out lost masterworks or underperformed pieces by the world’s great composers.
The students who make up the APSU Wind Ensemble know this about their professor and conductor, so they were a bit confused when he handed out the sheet music for their next performance. The words “Star Wars” were printed at the top of the page. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University
Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University student Jorge Jiménez Cano first arrived in the United States, he only spoke a handful of basic English words, such as “hello” and “yes.” This proved to be a bit problematic on the days when he wasn’t feeling well.
“When I’d go to the doctor, I’d say ‘ouch here,’” he recalled, pointing to his throat to show the doctor where he felt pain. “It was intimidating.” [Read more]

APSU Military Center coordinator receives Patriot Award
Austin Peay State University
Clarksville, TN – When Darlene Howell, coordinator of the Austin Peay State University Military Student Center, was called out of her office on Wednesday afternoon, she was a bit confused. Why were there so many people – including APSU President Tim Hall – gathered in the Center, watching her every move?
But then Bob Beaty, a volunteer with the Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), stepped forward to clear things up by presenting Howell with an award.

Europe remained a key concern for U.S. investors. Spain’s debt auction went better than feared. Global investors expressed some concerns about France’s election (first round on April 22nd, second round on May 6th). In its World Economic Outlook, the IMF revised its outlook for global growth slightly higher, but cautioned that “recent improvements are very fragile.”
The U.S. economic data were mixed. Retail sales were stronger than expected in March. Existing home sales and industrial production were weaker than anticipated. Residential construction figures were mixed (permits up, starts down), but first quarter figures were stronger than a year ago (likely aided by a mild winter). Weekly jobless claims were higher than expected, but seasonal adjustment at the start of the quarter is difficult, making recent figures appear suspect. [Read more]
