Austin Peay State University 2011 Distinguished Professor Award recipient to address 700-plus degree candidates
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will send off 733 candidates for degrees during dual Fall Commencement ceremonies December 16th in the Dunn Center.
Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy and the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award recipient, will be the keynote speaker at both commencement events.
The faculty member who earns the Distinguished Professor Award in May serves as commencement speaker at APSU’s fall graduation.
Randall holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the university of Oklahoma. He has a B.S. in mathematics from Maryville College, a Master of Divinity in theology from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts. [Read more]
Roxy Regional Theatre receives NEA Challenge America Fast-Track Grant

Clarksville, TN – As National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman has noted, “Art works everywhere,” which is why the NEA’s Challenge America Fast-Track (CAFT) program supports projects from primarily small and mid-sized arts organizations that extend the reach of the arts to underserved audiences —those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.
Roxy Productions Inc. (dba Roxy Regional Theatre) was selected to receive one of the 162 grants of $10,000 awarded to organizations in 46 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. [Read more]
Austin Peay’s African American Cultural Center to honor fall graduates
Clarksville, TN – The African American Cultural Center at Austin Peay State University will honor Fall 2011 African-American graduates during a recognition ceremony Thursday, December 15th.
The ceremony will begin at 6:00pm in the Clement Auditorium on APSU’s main campus. A reception for the graduates and their families will immediately follow the program in the African American Cultural Center located in Clement, Room 120. [Read more]

Following a horrible Thanksgiving Day holiday week, the stock market was due for a bounce, but the rebound was aided significantly by central bank action and favorable economic data.
The Federal Reserve joined five other central banks in efforts to boost dollar liquidity. The price of dollar swap arrangements between central banks was reduced to 50 basis points over the Overnight Index Swap rate (OIS), vs. 100 bps over OIS previously, and swap lines were extended to February 1st, 2013. This is U.S. dollar liquidity we’re talking about, but as a contingency measure, the central banks agreed to establish temporary liquidity facilities in other currency (euros, perhaps?) “should market conditions warrant.” The move does not go to the heart of Europe’s problems, but does aim to prevent the sort of seizing up that occurred among large global banks during the crisis of three year ago. Meanwhile, ECB president Draghi hinted of more support from the ECB if leaders could agree to a more comprehensive fiscal compact (a restatement of fiscal rules and enforcement of mutual commitments). Cheer for Cure Raises $5,000

Cunningham, TN – The “Cunningham Cheer for a Cure” Cheerleading Competition, held at Montgomery Central High School last Saturday, raised more than $5,000 for the Stella Bertz Breast Cancer Organization.
Teams attending were Montgomery Central High School Cheer, West Creek High School Cheer, Smyrna High School Cheer, Calloway County High School Cheer, Cheatham County High Dance and Montgomery Central Middle Dance.

Clarksville’s holds 5th Annual Downtown for the Holidays
Clarksville, TN – In what has become a Christmas Tradition, the City of Clarksville held their annual Downtown for the Holiday event on Saturday.
The event kicked off with the Jingle Bell Jog 5K Road Race in the morning, followed that afternoon by Christmas Caroling on the steps of the Montgomery County Court House along with free hot chocolate for the kids. The evening closed out with the 5th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade.

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay community flexed its muscles, Sunday, when more than 80 volunteers gathered to supply holiday groceries to the Lincoln Homes Community – a section of low-income housing adjacent to Austin Peay’s main campus – as part of the Govs Give Back.
The second-year project, spearheaded by the Austin Peay Fellowship of Christian Athletes, included volunteers from many Governors and Lady Govs sports teams through the Student Athlete Advisory Council, as well as the Baptist Student Ministry, the Church of Christ Student Ministry, UCHURCH and AQUA. New scholarly journal on hispanic studies comes to Austin Peay State University
Clarksville, TN – On a Tuesday afternoon earlier this week, Dr. Osvaldo DiPaolo, assistant professor of languages and literature at Austin Peay State University, sat in his office looking tired.
A pot of hours-old coffee sat warming on a shelf while a cold rain tapped against his window. DiPaolo smiled softly at the sound and talked about taking a nap before dinner.

101st Airborne Division Band to perform Holiday Concert at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library
Clarksville, TN – The 101st Airborne Division Band from Fort Campbell, KY will be performing in the atrium of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library at 6:00pm on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011.
This show will feature a “Rockin’” rendition of holiday music and other tunes for the whole family. This event is free and open to the public.
