Most of the economic data reports were better than expected. The ISM surveys were strong, reflecting solid growth in new orders and employment, albeit with a further increase in input price pressures. The January Employment Report was confusing. Nonfarm payrolls rose by a disappointing 36,000 (median forecast was about +145,000) and average weekly hours edged down, but that likely reflected the impact of poor weather. Manufacturing payrolls rose by 49,000 and factory hours advanced, consistent with the inventory story that came out of the 4Q10 GDP report (that is, lean inventories suggest gains in production in the near term).
The unemployment rate fell unexpectedly to 9.0%, but not all of the drop could be explained by a drop in labor force participation. The employment-to-population ratio, a better measure of slack in the labor market, edged only slightly higher (suggesting improvement, but not as much as the drop in the unemployment rate would seem to suggest). In his speech to the National Press Club, Fed Chairman Bernanke was optimistic that the pace of the economic recovery would improve, but cautioned that it would be years before the job market returned to normal. APSU Philosophy Department honors student who has audited courses for 20-plus years
Clarksville, TN – Mildred Frensley may be the true definition of a “lifelong learner.”
In 1988, she decided to take the Critical Reasoning and Logic course at Austin Peay State University.
“I didn’t want to stagnate,” she said. “I wanted to learn something else.”
More than 20 years later, Frensley has audited almost every philosophy course offered in the APSU Department of History and Philosophy – some even more than once.

Recipients Receive Mayor’s Certificate for Quick Action
Clarksville, TN – Mayor Kim McMillan recognized Clarksville Police Officer Beau Skinner, U.S. Army Captain Graham Inman, and Cynthia Young for their life-saving actions at 1032 Washington Street on January 25th, 2011.
Officer Skinner and Pat Nowell, who accepted the certificate for Captain Inman (relocated to Fort Rucker) were presented with Mayor certificates at the February 3rd City Council Meeting.

Fort Campbell Welcome Home – 3rd BCT Feb. 3rd 5:30pm
Fort Campbell, KY – On February 3rd, 2011 at 5:30pm, Fort Campbell KY held a welcome home ceremony for the 101st Airborne Division. 37 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (Wings of Destiny) soldiers and 109 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Rakkasan) soldiers were greeted by cheers from family members and friends. 146 Soldiers total returned from duty in Afghanistan on this flight.
Clarksville Parks and Recreation kicks off Youth Recreation League registration
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Parks and Recreation will kick off Youth Recreation League registration February 7th, 2011, that will continue through April 1st, 2011. Youth League has added a 13-14 division and is now open to children ages 5-14.
Youth League also includes a BlastBall League for children ages 3-4. BlastBall teaches toddlers the fundamentals of baseball and softball using a fun, honking base! [Read more]

Dr. Culley Carson-Grefe, professor of languages and literature, delivered a paper, titled “Teaching Business French: A Communicative Approach,” on January 11th at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities. [Read more]

Fort Campbell, KY – On February 3rd, 2011 at 12:45am, Fort Campbell held a welcome home ceremony for the 101st Airborne Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3-330). 199 Soldiers returned from duty in Afghanistan.
