APSU to have 1st Run@Work Day September 17th for faculty/staff

Austin Peay State UniversityA total of 85 faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University will put on their walking and running shoes later this week to take part in the University’s first Run@Work Day.

The inaugural Run@Work Day at APSU, sponsored by University Recreation, will be from noon-12:30pm, Friday, September 17th outside the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. The event is open to faculty and staff at APSU.

The local event coincides with the National Run@Work Day, held the third Friday of every September and sponsored by the Road Runners Club of America. The event, which started nationally five years ago, encourages people to incorporate at least 30 minutes of walking or running into their daily lives. [Read more]

Comedy on the Cumberland to return the the Roxy Regional Theatre

The October 12th Comedy on the Cumberland PosterFast becoming one of Clarksville’s most popular fundraisers, Comedy on the Cumberland is set to return to the Roxy Theatre on Tuesday October 12th at 7:00pm. The headliner will be Nashville comedian Keith Alberstadt. The October show will raise money and awareness for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Humane Society.

Alberstadt has appeared on David Letterman and is a former Nashville comic who has taken his career to New York. “We were fortunate to get Alberstadt who is in high demand, and was coming through Nashville on his way to South Carolina to do a show”, said Bonecutter. Former Comedy on the Cumberland headliner Rik Roberts said “You don’t want to miss Keith — I promise!”

APSU president to kick off APSU’s 3rd annual Library Athenaeum

Austin Peay State UniversityTim Hall, president of Austin Peay State University, will kick off the 2010-11 Library Athenaeum program.

The series will begin at 1:00pm, Wednesday, September 15th in Woodward Library. Hall will present “Fractured Souls: Lawyers’ Roles and Ethics,” discussing the reality that lawyers are sometimes called upon to do things in the representation of clients they would not do in their individual capacities.

In his talk, Hall will investigate the question of whether it is reasonable to think of ethics in terms of the professional role one occupies.

Students are encouraged to attend; the event is free and open to the public. [Read more]

Riverfest 2010The 23rd annual Riverfest Celebration, kicked off Friday night, September 10th at 5:00pm. This free, two day music and arts festival features three stages of a variety of local, regional and nationally-known entertainers, delicious food, and fun for the entire family.

Exit Right hit the Gateway Stage at 7:00pm to a large crowd. The band played until 8:00pm to a cheering audience.

The economic data calendar was thin. The Fed’s Beige Book, the summary of anecdotal conditions from the 12 Federal Reserve districts, noted “widespread signs of a deceleration” in national economic activity (that means slower growth, not a double dip). After rising in August, claims for unemployment insurance benefits fell back to 451,000. However, it’s unclear whether August figures were distorted (possibly by classification errors related to the extension of unemployment insurance benefits) or whether the latest week was distorted (as the Labor Day holiday led to delays in state reports to the Labor Department). The trade deficit narrowed in July, after widening sharply in June.

Stock market participants were apparently encouraged by the view that the economy will likely avoid a double dip, but were not exactly ecstatic (in that growth is still expected to be subpar in the near term). Bond yields rose. Market activity was light due to the holidays (Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah). [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityA year after breaking ground, Austin Peay State University will celebrate the grand opening of the new Hemlock Semiconductor Building at noon, Thursday, September 16th.

The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and name dedication ceremony at the new facility, located at the intersection of College and Eighth streets. The Hemlock Semiconductor Building houses the chemical engineering technology (CET) associate degree program and laboratory. [Read more]

31st Annual Mayor’s Golf Classic

City of ClarksvilleThe 31st Annual Mayor’s Golf Classic is set to take place this September 18th-19th at Swan Lake Golf Course. This popular golf tournament is a favorite among local golfers and features one of the largest fields of amateur players in the area.

Mayors Golf ClassicThe Mayor’s Golf Classic is also the last tournament of the year that offers points for the Local Tournament of Champions.

The deadline to enter the tournament is noon on Thursday, September 16th. The tournament is limited to 124 players. The entry fee of $110.00 includes one practice round at Swan Lake Golf Course on either September 13th through 17th (Practice round must be scheduled at Swan Lake and does not include a golf cart), lunch on both days of the tournament, use of a golf cart, commemorative gifts and the opportunity to win prizes.
