The 24th Annual Governors Golf Classic is this weekend

Austin Peay State University GovernorsSponsored by the Governors Club, the four-person men and women’s scramble will be limited to 60 teams, 30 per shotgun starts at noon, Friday, and 8:00am, Saturday, at Swan Lake Golf Course.

For a fourth straight year, men and women’s divisions are established. Cost is $400.00 per team, or $100.00 per person. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Austin Peay State University Athletics. [Read more]

Clarksville Academy ACT score surpasses State and National Average

The Clarksville AcademyClarksville Academy student’s ACT school average has surpassed the 2009-2010 state and national average. CA students averaged a 23.9 composite ACT score while the state average was a 19.6 and the national average was 21.0. The ACT is a national college admissions examination used to evaluate the achievement of high school students in the four core areas of English, reading, math and science.

The test is considered a level examination for students across the nation and the scores are utilized by American colleges and universities as one of the determining factors for college acceptance. [Read more]

Nominations for the Third Annual Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards are now being accepted within Montgomery County. The awards will celebrate the efforts of volunteers who strive to improve their communities through service.

One youth and one adult will be selected in Montgomery County to receive this prestigious award. Nominees will be judged based on the community’s needs of the volunteer service performed, initiative taken to perform the service, creativity used to solve a community problem and impact of the volunteer service on the community. There were several surprises in the economic data reports, mostly to the downside. The market took some comfort earlier in the week as the Producer Price Index (PPI) seemed to suggest that deflation was less likely to be a problem and that manufacturing output was strong in July. However, the core PPI (reported up 0.3%) was boosted by what is likely to have been a seasonal adjustment quirk in light motor trucks. Industrial production was boosted partly by a 9.9% jump in motor vehicle production, which reflected fewer-than-usual summer plant closings (prior to seasonal adjustment, auto output fell 20.3% in July).

On Thursday, the stock market was rattled by a further increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits (which may or may not be distorted) and by a surprisingly weak Philadelphia Federal Reserve Index (-7.7, compared to expectations of +7.0). [Read more]

Lady Govs volleyball to participate in Run for the Fallen

Run for the FallenAustin Peay State University’s volleyball team will be among the thousands nationwide participating in the third Run for the Fallen, Saturday, at Waholi Pavilion at Fort Campbell.

The event began in 2008 when a small team of runners ran across the United States to raise awareness about the lives of those service members who fought, keep the spirit of those who fell in action alive and to support organizations that help wounded veterans and the families of those killed. Last year, more than 5,000 participants in 35 states and four countries ran a combined total of more than 31,000 miles. [Read more]

APSU alumnus attending top international business graduate school

Austin Peay State UniversityWith international business increasingly emerging as a field of academic study, an Austin Peay State University alumnus has taken his interest in the discipline to an advanced level at a top global school.

David Jaime (pronounced Da-veed Hi-may) is attending the Thunderbird School of Global Management on a full scholarship. He graduated in December 2008 from APSU with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

“Thunderbird is number one in international business management,” Jaime said. “To attend a school with such a diverse student body and international focus has been a great learning experience.” [Read more]

The First Tee of Clarksville Fall Program

The First Tee of Clarksville Registration for the First Tee of Clarksville 2010 Fall Session has begun. Classes are for youth ages 8-17. Registration hours will be 10:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday and 10:00am to 4:00pm Saturday and Sunday through August 31st.

Classes will begin September 1st and run through October and will be held at the Ironworkers Practice Club, 429 Iron Workers Road, Clarksville TN

Three APSU leaders were tapped for the 2010-11 Leadership Clarksville program: Dr. Dixie Dennis, associate provost of Grants and Sponsored Programs and dean of the College of Graduate Studies; Lee Hall, first lady of APSU; and Bill Persinger, executive director of Public Relations and Marketing. This month’s free concert features the classic rock band, The Sell Outs.

Jammin' In the AlleyThe band is made up of four local musicians- Neil Brock, Joe Wall, Rick Goodwin, Brian Glass- all who have been playing in Clarksville since their teen years. After years of traveling around and playing in different bands such as, The Sizzling Happy Family, His Boy Elroy, The Beagles, and The Billygoats and Myth- just to name a few, have now come together and formed The Sell Outs, playing classic guitar rock in the Clarksville area. Playing music from the late 60’s to the 21st century and covering bands like Santana, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Sublime, Rolling Stones and much more- everyone is sure to have a good time!
