APSU recipient of gift annuity from longtime educator, APSU alumnus and leader
For 38 years, Dr. Harold S. Pryor served Tennessee higher education in some capacity – from professor to administrator to volunteer.

Dr. Harold S. Pryor
Pryor has been retired for some time, but he continues his support of education, in general, and of Austin Peay, specifically. Pryor, of Columbia, recently established a gift annuity to APSU, demonstrating his love of education and student success.
“I have fond memories of APSU,” he said. “I wanted to do something for the University.”
Pryor said giving back – whether through monetary donations or philanthropic services – to one’s alma mater provides the building block for generations to come.
“We have an obligation, in one way or another, to help higher education and the students,” he said. “It’s an important thing to do.” [Read more]

The Weekly Market Snapshot from Frazier Allen

Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist
There were a lot of economic reports this week and most of them were disappointing. Consumer confidence fell in June, with sharp declines in regions affected by the Gulf oil spill. The June Institute for Supply Management (ISM) survey suggested a moderation in the pace of manufacturing growth (still positive). Unit motor vehicle sales slowed somewhat in June. Pending home sales plunged in May, following the expiration of the homebuyers’ tax credit.
Weekly jobless claims were higher than anticipated. The June Employment Report was a mixed bag. Nonfarm payrolls fell by 125,000, reflecting a 225,000 decline in temporary census workers, in line with expectations. However, private-sector payrolls rose a disappointing 83,000 – softer than expected, but not a disaster. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.5% (from 9.7% in May and vs. expectations of 9.8%), but the decline was due largely to a decrease in labor force participation. The employment-population ratio fell to 58.5% compared to 58.7% in May and 59.4% a year ago. Average weekly hours edged down, and average hourly earnings slipped 0.1% – both disappointing. APSU alumna reflects on congressional fellowship
On June 8th, Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., claimed victory in the Democratic primary runoff election in Little Rock, AR.
It was a race in which unions particularly have spent millions of dollars against Lincoln in a failed attempt to keep her and other incumbents from another victory.
The reason? It could be something as simple as perseverance.
“She has been counted out so many times,” said Courtney Cooper, a legislative fellow for Lincoln and an Austin Peay State University alumna. “What’s so unique to me about her is that this woman can maintain a 25-member staff, a congressional office, a re-election campaign and a family. She’s keeping it all together.”
