Youth Football League to hold registration this weekend

The Clarksville Greyhounds Youth Football League will hold registration for the 2010 season on June 26th at Governor’s Square Mall from 10:00am-3:00pm and on June 27th from 2:00pm-6:00pm. There are five age groups 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

Players will be assigned to age groups based on their age as of July 31st. The Clarksville Greyhounds are a member of the Tennessee Youth Football Alliance and will play teams from various areas throughout Middle TN. All new players must bring a copy of their birth certificate. Come join in on the excitement!!!

Lunch and Learn with Kathryn Olita

Clarksville Area Chamber of CommerceLunch and Learn Human Resources Series will be held on Tuesday, June 29th from 11:30am to 1:00pm at the Chamber of Commerce. The discussion will be lead by Kathryn Olita of Batson, Nolan, Pearson Miller & Joiner.

Ms. Olita will speak on the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Acts, the final revised amendments to the Family Medical Leave Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Employer’s Freedom of Choice Act.

APSU staffer, alumna to go to Japan to teach English

An Austin Peay State University staff member and alumna who pursued study-abroad courses as a student is leaving APSU to teach English as a second language in the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.

Brie Vogt (’09), who has worked in the Office of International Education since March 2008, will move to Bunga Takada, a city of less than 20,000 people next to the sea in Japan’s Oita Prefecture. She will relocate there at the end of the summer.

“I’ve been researching a lot of wonderful things about Japan and look forward to my new adventure,” Vogt said. [Read more]

Local Jeweler William Sites Earns National Award

The Black Orlov, one of the largest black diamonds in the world, is said to bring good luck to whoever touches it. Only a select few people ever get that honor considering the 67-carat stone is valued at more than $1.5 million, but for a few minutes in the early 1970s, local jeweler William Sites (’72) held the diamond in his hands.

“This guy walked in, and he reached in his pocket and pulled out this little box and opened it up, and in it was the Black Orlov,” Sites said recently. “I got to look at it and hold it. It was phenomenal.”

Sites was a young, 24-year-old gemology student in New York City at the time. He’d recently joined the family business, Sites Jewelers, which opened its first store in downtown Clarksville in 1922, and he was spending six months at the Gemology Institute of America, learning everything he could about the trade. City officially opens the newest section of the Riverwalk

In a formal ribbon cutting ceremony the City of Clarksville unveiled the new North Riverwalk Extension on Wednesday. Clarksville Mayor Johnny Piper listed the features to the attendees at the ribbon cutting ceremony which consists of a 12’ sidewalk lined with park benches, picnic tables, and lighting along the Cumberland River from Pilot’s Plaza (behind O’Charleys) to the mouth of the Red River.
