NEHS choirs bring Broadway to local stage

After two months of intensive rehearsals in both voice and choreography, to say nothing of the memorization involved, Broadway came to Clarksville Thursday evening as the Northeast High School Choral Department presented its Spring Show 2009 in the NEHS auditorium.
The show will also be presented Tonight at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult, $3 per student.
It’s a show that has something extra this year when the Exit One Show Choir, the Concert Choir and the SSA Women’s Choir travel to Branson, Missouri in April to perform as the opening act for the Haywood Family Show, with a selection of routines from the current show to be performed and taped “on tour.” [Read more]
“Restore Hope” applications available
Hundreds of volunteers will restore hope for local residents by providing free home repairs.
The City of Clarksville Office of Housing and Community Development announced today that applications for the 2009 Good Neighbor Volunteer Home Repair Program are now available through March 31, 2009.
This year’’s program is expected to provide assistance to approximately 40 homeowners. Eligible applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Many low-income homeowners who have lived in their home for years desperately need home repairs but are unable to afford the expense.
Having decent housing- the comfort of a sound livable home equates to peace of mind and helps revitalize neighborhoods. Annually the City partners with local faith based organizations to help revitalize and repair homes for low-moderate income residents. The repairs are funded with grant money from the City’’s Community Development Block Grant provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the labor is donated. [Read more]
Rails-To-Trails pilot project to launch in April
Work is underway on the Rails-To-Trails project that has long been a dream of city officials and community leaders in Clarksville.
The pilot phase of Rails-To-Trails will include walking, jogging and biking trails that span 3.6 miles from Riverfront Park to Pollard Road. Eventually, the trails will extend four to five miles, all the way to Peachers Mill Road at 101st Parkway.
Several years ago, the city purchased 30 acres of railroad footage owned by Montell Meadows. And in 2008, the city accepted a donation from the Pressler family of 94 acres that will enhance the trails project.
The trail will provide panoramic views of the Cumberland River and will offer respite in a rural setting in the center of the city. The pilot phase is due to be completed by year’’s end. The future goal is to connect to the Ashland City Bicentennial Greenway Trail. Ten acres have already been purchased near the county line for the expansion. [Read more]
“Agent Orange” testing encouraged for Vietnam Vets
Veterans who served in Vietnam are urged to be tested for possible damage caused by the defoliant Agent Orange.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), approximately 20 million gallons of herbicides were used in Vietnam between 1962 and 1971 to remove unwanted plant life and leaves which otherwise provided cover for enemy forces. Exposure to Agent Orange has caused 11 different diseases to develop among veterans who served in Vietnam.
It has also been concluded that exposure to Agent Orange could also affect the offspring of these veterans. Please contact the nearest VA medical center for an examination. Visit http://www2.va.gov/directory/guide/home.asp?isFlash=1 to find a center near you.
MOAA lobbies for military vets
The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is a dynamic lobbyist for all military retirees. Members include veterans — retired Marines, sailors, Air Force and Coast Guard personnel. MOAA is a non-profit , veteran’s association dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families. It is vigilant in safeguarding and extending the benefits of all veterans. When MOAA speaks to Congress, they listen, and take immediate action.
Today, with a new administration, MOAA is busy developing and implementing strategies for legislation that benefits veterans ,their families and survivors, in recognition of the sacrifices made.
MOAA’s goal in 2009 is to be an effective organizational voice shaping relevant government policy and promoting earned benefits. Under their guardianship, there will be no retreat or reduction of retired veterans benefits. [Read more]
St Patrick’s Day Treat for children: “Green Eggs and Ham”
Getting creative with food is an excellent way to get your kids to try new things, and it can even make an average meal fun again.
This morning in honor of St. Patrick’s day I made for Elle-Girl ‘Green Eggs and Ham a-la Sam I Am’
Ingredients
- 1-2 tablespoons of butter
- 4 slices of Ham
- 8 eggs
- 2 tablespoons of milk
- 1-2 drops of green food coloring
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
- *chopped green peppers
Melt a teaspoon of butter in your skillet and add a drop of food coloring to the butter before adding your ham slices. Add your ham and flip over in butter mixture until coated then let fry until edges are brown. Then remove from skillet and wrap in aluminum foil to keep warm, and set aside. [Read more]
Add a little humor to your life
Humor in Uniform is a favorite section in the Reader’s Digest. Having served as a soldier and Army Chaplain, for 20 years, in time of peace and for two years of war in Vietnam, I appreciate recognition given our soldiers, even if its humorous.Being rather serious and solemn by nature, I have a psychological need for entertainment, especially humor. I meet this need for balance for jocularity by selecting cheerful TV programs to watch while exercising at the Athletic Club. When I get there early enough, I’ll watch my all time favorite, M.A.S.H.
For my own benefit, as well as that of listeners, when I give a homily at the Unitarian Church, I introduce the message with a humorous story. I find this is an effective means of gaining the attention of the congregation. It also gives me some sense of calmness and peace of mind. [Read more]
Parks and Rec schedules events, activities
Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank everyone who participated in the Spring into Health Fair. The exhibitors and visitors made the event a success. We hope you had as much fun as we did and maybe learned something new, too. If you were not able to make it, don’t worry. The success of the event prompted us to host another in the future.
