Health Foundation awarded $3m from Clarksville Volunteer Health Inc.

March 29, 2009 | Print This Post

Board members of the Clarksville Volunteer Health, Inc. have presented a gift of $3 million to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Health Foundation.

accepting-checkThe March 23 presentation was made to Ben Kimbrough, Sr., foundation chairman, by Clarksville Volunteer Health board chairman Bill Wyatt and vice chairman, Cecil Morgan, Jr.

The Health Foundation is a non-profit organization that was created jointly by the city of Clarksville, Montgomery County and the former Gateway Hospital Board of Trustees. It operates exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes, and is designed to promote the health of Clarksville and Montgomery Country residents and the citizens of northern middle Tennessee.

Clarksville Volunteer Health, Inc. administers all assets of the former Gateway Hospital, and maintains 20% ownership of Clarksville Health System, G.P., owner of the new Gateway Medical Center that opened in June 2008.  The remaining 80% of Clarksville Health System, G.P. is owned by a subsidiary of Community Health Systems, Inc., which is headquartered in Franklin, Tenn.

The $3 million gift to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Health Foundation was made possible by the sale of parcels of land owned by the former hospital, located around the former Madison Street facility, and from operating revenue of the former hospital.  According to Wyatt, the $3 million gift is hopefully the first of many donations that will be made to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Health Foundation by his organization. Clarksville Volunteer Health will continue to provide funding to the non-profit health foundation as further revenue is generated by the sale of additional assets belonging to the former hospital, and the division of future profits from the group’s ownership in Clarksville Health System, G.P.

  • Is the Tennessee Plan constitutional?

After months of uncertainty while the United States Congress wrangled over details of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Governor presented his initial budget proposal Monday night to a Joint Convention of the House and Senate. Because of the unprecedented economic situation facing Tennessee, the Governor is proposing a multi- year approach, and laying out possibilities for the next four years. He explained that much of the ARRA money, which totals approximately $5 billion over two years for Tennessee, comes with strings attached and has essentially already been earmarked by Congress.

According the Administration, about “two-fifths” of the money are “Tennessee” funds—monies that will allow the state some leniency regarding where to use them—while the remainder are “Congressional” funds that have multiple strings attached. [Read more]
