Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to discuss Earth’s atmosphere as a nuisance in astronomy

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Earth’s atmosphere, though necessary to support life, is a major nuisance to accurate astronomical work. Instrumentation has improved over the past few decades to a point that the time-tested techniques to account for the effects of the atmosphere on astronomical data are no longer sufficient.

“With major new astronomical surveys beginning, advances in the techniques to account for the atmosphere are needed,” said Dr. J. Allyn Smith, associate professor of physics and astronomy. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University Concert to capture whimsy and freedom of childhood March 12th

APSU Department of MusicClarksville, TN – One afternoon several years ago, the prominent Hungarian composer György Kurtág watched as a group of children banged away at a piano. They were playing with the instrument as if it were a toy, and Kurtág was struck by how much fun they seemed to have.

That observation inspired him to compose his solo piano pieces, “Játékok” (Games), which captures the playful freedom of childhood with its sometimes frenetic sounds. At 7:30pm on March 12th, Austin Peay State University professor of music Dr. Jeffrey Wood will present the little-heard piece in a concert filled with works all denoting childhood. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Within the last decade, there has been a movement toward open textbooks as the digital world makes sharing content not only simple but common sense.

Ellen Smyth, instructor of mathematics at Austin Peay State University, said although sharing content is only a click away, the question goes from “Why would we share?” to “Why would we not share?”

“And that is without any external pressure,” she said. “Leaders of the open education movement are now calling for external pressure – a handful of national policies that could change the face of education forever and, in my opinion, for the better.” [Read more]
