“Fly” Williams jersey to be retired at APSU

flywilliamsThe greatest basketball player in Austin Peay State University history finally will have his jersey retired.

James “Fly” Williams, one of the legendary players in Ohio Valley Conference history whose early 1970s flamboyant style literally was responsible for packing gymnasiums almost everywhere he played, will see his jersey retired this Thursday at halftime of the Austin Peay-UT Martin game. The 8 p.m. contest will be televised by ESPNU.

Williams starred at Austin Peay during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons, literally helping put the Governors basketball program on the map. He helped lead the Governors to a 22-7 record in 1972-73 and APSU’s first-ever Division I NCAA tournament appearance that included a 77-75 win against Jacksonville and a controversial 106-100 overtime loss to Kentucky. Only a few more weeks and our trees will be budding with new leaves for the year 2009. It is fascinating to watch their transformation in the spring. This budding will be swiftly followed with out brilliantly colored songbirds building their nests among the newly sprung to life branches of the trees. The trees closest to the house will be occupied first, trees that enhance our lawns and the countryside.

In building our house six years ago, we had regular contractors for the project. We went the mile and invested thousands of dollars in the lawn and yard. We hired Tim, a professional landscaper, to plant shrubbery, sod and trees.

For us an appealing and robust lawn was a priority for the property. In childhood, I recall climbing, scaling the robust trees that grew on grandpa’s farm in the Ozarks of Missouri. I recall too climbing the persimmon tree to retrieve the ripened fruit for a snack. My cousin Leroy example emboldened me to climb to the highest branches. [Read more]

Alan Goldstein Photography showcased at Silke’s

not-what-it-seemsThe art of Alan Goldstein will be showcased at Silke’s Old World Bakery at 1214 College Street, with an opening reception slated for February 14 from 7-8:30 p.m.  Goldstein has been  a professional photographer for over 40 years.

“That’s all I have done my entire adult life.  For most of that 40 years I was a portrait photographer.  Now I am doing less people ann Goldstein

In 1986 the Professional Photographers of America bestowed Goldstein the honor of Master of Photography for  photographic excellence.

In 2006 he was awarded the honor of Photographic Craftsman, also by PPA, for his contributions to the profession of photography through continuing education and the sharing of knowledge with fellow photographers to promote excellence in imagery and business practices.

Ice storm heading for north Middle Tennessee

iced-branchThe National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning and hazardous weather statement for northwest and north central Tennessee counties from 12 p.m. tonight through Tuesday. Significant accumulations are possible, particularly close to the Kentucky border.

The forecast calls for rain to develop this evening, turning to freezing rain around midnight with a low temperature of 30. The freezing rain is expected to change back to all rain Tuesday afternoon. high on Tuesday reach 37. Rain and sleet will continue into Tuesday night, with a chance of rain and snow Wednesday morning. A developing storm system near Texas will  move northeast toward the mid-state region tonight. A strong high pressure center north of Tennessee will keep temperatures at or below freezing, causing freezing rain to occur. Heaviest ice accumulations are expected near the Kentucky/Tennessee line. Honoring the service of Martin Luther King Jr.

-On the eve of the inauguration of the nation’s first African American president, Barack Obama, Clarksvillian’s today celebrated and honored one of the country’s foremost civil rights leaders, the late Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, Martin Luther King’s fight for equality and justice was commemorated with a a parade that culminated with  formal ceremonies at Public Square in downtown Clarksville.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. He is an icon in the history of human rights.

A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career, leading  the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president.
