Rather, you might picture yourself in a smoky bar in Memphis or New Orleans, sweating from the room\u2019s thick, humid air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the \u2018Jingle Bells\u2019 that you\u2019re used to hearing,\u201d David Steinquest, professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. \u201cIt\u2019s got a very bluesy kind of feel to it. It\u2019s a whole lot different, but I think it\u2019s fun when people get to hear these pieces they know, but they\u2019re sort of done in a whole different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98081\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Percussion-Ensemble-Holiday-concert.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98081\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98081\" title=\"Percussion Ensemble Holiday concert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Percussion-Ensemble-Holiday-concert-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Percussion Ensemble Holiday concert\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-98081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Percussion Ensemble Holiday concert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->That\u2019s what audience members can expect from Steinquest\u2019s newest concert, \u201cA Very Merry Christmas,\u201d which begins at 7:30pm on December 2nd in the Music\/Mass Communication Building\u2019s Concert Hall on the APSU campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis concert is edgier,\u201d Steinquest said. \u201cLast year\u2019s concert was just a little more laid back in general. We are doing some things that are really pretty on this, but there\u2019s a little wildness going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A band, featuring Allison Campbell and David Alford on vocals, Paul Carrol Binkley on guitar, Tony Nagy on bass, Matt DeVore on drums and Steinquest on percussion, will take the stage that evening, accompanied by the APSU percussion ensemble, to perform unique renditions of timeless holiday classics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are pieces that everybody knows, but they are dressed up in unusual and innovative arrangements that give them new life.\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>The band will perform contemporary Christian singer Sara Groves\u2019 version of \u201cIt Came Upon a Midnight Clear,\u201d which puts the original song\u2019s words into a completely different melody. They\u2019ll also tackle a few numbers by Christian rap\/hip hop band Family Force 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re going to be really fun but will feel surprisingly right,\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will feature several other holiday standards, such as \u201cCarol of the Bells\u201d and \u201cThe Little Drummer Boy,\u201d all distilled through the influences such as Michael McDonald, of the Doobie Brothers, James Taylor and Oregon\u2019s genre-bending orchestra, Pink Martini.<\/p>\n<p>Admission is either two cans of food, which will be donated to Loaves and Fishes, or $3.00.
