The legend of Wilma Rudolph, Clarksville\u2019s most famous woman athlete who was the first female to win three gold medals in the Olympics in 1960 in Rome, Italy, is preserved in her classic crossing-the-finish-line pose at McGregor Park at the intersection of College Street and Riverside Drive.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The history of these pieces and more are told in stories and photos in a student-produced monograph titled \u201cThe Civic Art of Clarksville: The stories behind the pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in the Public Management 3250 Principles and Practice of Urban Planning course, taught by Dr. Becky Starnes, helped to guide the direction of the 52-page publication \u2013 from writing the articles to taking the photographs to designing the pages.<\/p>\n<p>The project, funded by a Student Academic Success Grant, was designed to encourage students to get out into the community and \u201cexperience its soul,\u201d Starnes said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82624\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/CivicArtofCville-21.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82624\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82624 \" title=\"\u201cThe Civic Art of Clarksville\u201d\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/CivicArtofCville-21-429x480.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cThe Civic Art of Clarksville\u201d\" width=\"257\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-82624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe Civic Art of Clarksville\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur city\u2019s art and landmarks reflect the values and cultural heritage of our residents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the students who served as editors of \u201cThe Civic Art of Clarksville\u201d \u2013 Eric Martin, Wilson Mendez Jr. and Marlon Scott \u2013 echoed Starnes\u2019 comments in their foreward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivic art provides an identity for the citizenry that is unique to their city. It inspires hometown pride and promotes a culture all residents become a part of. It breathes a little bit of soul into what would otherwise be a non-descript landscape of streets and buildings,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the monograph was a collaborative project involving students in the APSU Department of Communication.
