{"id":5503,"date":"2011-03-12T18:00:39","date_gmt":"2011-03-13T00:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=5503"},"modified":"2011-03-12T18:00:39","modified_gmt":"2011-03-13T00:00:39","slug":"historian-and-author-to-talk-about-memory-in-regards-to-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2011\/03\/12\/historian-and-author-to-talk-about-memory-in-regards-to-civil-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Historian and author to talk about memory in regards to Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The sesquicentennial of the Civil War begins this year, and while there\u2019s no shortage of books or movies about that subject, the question remains, \u201cwhat do we really know of that bloody time in our nation\u2019s history?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are first-hand accounts from the battles and newspaper articles printed at the time, but what about the stories told by survivors years after they returned home from the war.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli therapist Ori Sivan remarked in the movie \u201cWaltz with Bashir\u201d that \u201cMemory is dynamic, it\u2019s alive,\u201d and that\u2019s part of the problem when it comes to looking at the information passed down from one generation to the next.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At 5:00pm on March 24th, Dr. Caroline Janney, author and associate professor of history at Purdue University, will speak on this issue during a free lecture in Austin Peay State University\u2019s Gentry Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy talk will address the topic of how Civil War veterans remembered the war by the late-1800s and how their memories helped (and in some cases hindered) national healing and reconciliation,\u201d Janney said. \u201cSpecifically, I will discuss the creation and dedication of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67453\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Caroline-Janney.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67453\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67453  \" title=\"Dr. Caroline Janney\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Caroline-Janney-306x480.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Caroline Janney\" width=\"221\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-67453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Caroline Janney<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Janney received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2005. At Purdue, she teaches courses on the Civil War, Civil War memory and U.S. women\u2019s history. Her first book, \u201cBurying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies\u2019 Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause\u201d (2008), explores the role of white southern women as the creators and purveyors of Confederate tradition in the immediate post-Civil War South. Her second book, a volume in the Littlefield History of the Civil War Era (University of North Carolina Press), will examine how the Civil War has been remembered between 1865 and the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>Janney will also visit APSU history students during her visit to campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students are reading her book in my \u2018The South Since 1861\u2019 class, and she is going to come and talk to them on Friday,\u201d Dr. Minoa Uffelman, APSU associate professor of history, said.<\/p>\n<p>The Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and APSU Student Affairs are cosponsoring the lecture.
