He was set to premiere composer George Enescu\u2019s last work, Chamber Symphony for 12 Players, but he worried the Romanian audience wouldn\u2019t appreciate the complexities or the brilliance of the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was convinced the audience would not be able to grasp it on first hearing it, so he had it played twice,\u201d Dr. Gregory Wolynec, associate professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. \u201cThis last work of his, people who specialize in the music of this composer refer to it as the hardest to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41633\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/gateway-chamber-ensemble1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41633\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41633\" title=\"Gateway Chamber Ensemble\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/gateway-chamber-ensemble1-480x328.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Chamber Ensemble\" width=\"480\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gateway Chamber Ensemble<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->For that reason, the work is underperformed and in danger of slipping into obscurity. But at 7:30pm on March 14th, APSU\u2019s Grammy-nominated Gateway Chamber Ensemble will offer a rare, free concert retrospective of Enescu\u2019s works, and when it comes to the notorious Chamber Symphony, Wolynec said they\u2019ll follow Silvestri\u2019s lead by performing it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur task is to find the beauty and make this work approachable to the new listener,\u201d Wolynec, the ensemble\u2019s conductor, said. \u201cThis is an opportunity to hear a piece twice that you may never hear again live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The concert is part of the Dimensions New Music Series, which presents contemporary music written since 1950 in three free concerts each year. The series is sponsored by the APSU Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/gateway-chamber-ensemble-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41640\" title=\"Gateway Chamber Ensemble \" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/gateway-chamber-ensemble-1-480x455.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Chamber Ensemble\" width=\"288\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a>Monday\u2019s performance will open with Enescu\u2019s Chamber Symphony by the Gateway Chamber Ensemble. The concert will then revert back to a couple of the composer\u2019s earlier and more approachable works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLisa Vanarsdel (APSU professor of music) is going to play an early work when Enescu was living and working in Paris called \u2018Cantabile Et Presto,\u2019\u201d Wolynec said. \u201cThen Jeffrey Wood (APSU professor of music) is going to play a middle period work of his that is for solo piano.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble will then return to the stage. Wolynec will conduct a few excerpts from the Chamber Symphony to draw connections between that piece and the earlier works.
