{"id":4260,"date":"2010-10-23T13:30:30","date_gmt":"2010-10-23T18:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=4260"},"modified":"2010-10-23T13:30:30","modified_gmt":"2010-10-23T18:30:30","slug":"award-winning-writer-richard-bausch-to-read-at-apsu-on-october-28th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2010\/10\/23\/award-winning-writer-richard-bausch-to-read-at-apsu-on-october-28th\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-winning writer Richard Bausch to read at APSU on October 28th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The great short story writer Bernard Malamud once wrote, \u201cIn a few pages a good story provides the complexity of life while producing the surprise and effect of knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anyone familiar with the work of Richard Bausch knows that the Memphis-based writer clearly understands this principle, leading him to become the late Malamud\u2019s heir as the American master of short fiction. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 2004 Bausch received the PEN\/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and on October 28th, he will visit Austin Peay State University to read from his newest short story collection, \u201cSomething is Out There.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reading, which is free and open to the public, beings at 8:00pm in room 303 of the Morgan University Center.<\/p>\n<p>Bausch is the past chancellor of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and he currently serves as the Moss Chair of Excellence in the writing program at the University of Memphis.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51987\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Bausch-photo.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51987\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51987   \" title=\"Richard Bausch (Photo by Mark Weber)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Bausch-photo-314x480.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Bausch (Photo by Mark Weber)\" width=\"220\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Bausch (Photo by Mark Weber)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He is the author of 11 novels and eight collections of stories, including the novels \u201cRebel Powers,\u201d \u201cIn the Night Season,\u201d \u201cHello to the Cannibals,\u201d \u201cThanksgiving Night\u201d and \u201cPeace.\u201d His short story collections include \u201cSpirits,\u201d \u201cSomeone to Watch Over Me,\u201d \u201cThe Stories of Richard Bausch\u201d and \u201cWives and Lovers: Three Short Novels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the PEN\/Malamud Award, Bausch has won two National Magazine Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lila-Wallace Reader&#8217;s Digest Fund Writer&#8217;s Award, the Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and, for his novel \u201cPeace,\u201d the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.<\/p>\n<p>The October 28th reading, which is sponsored by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the Arts and Heritage Development Council, will conclude with a book signing.
