The recipients were individuals who, according to the Foundation, \u201chave shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MacArthur Fellows, as the winners are known, are rewarded with $500,000, which is considered an investment on their future accomplishments. They have gone on to become some of the country\u2019s top artists and creative talents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43863\" style=\"width: 473px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43863\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43863 \" title=\"Meredith Monk (The Standing Room)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/monk1.jpg\" alt=\"Meredith Monk (The Standing Room)\" width=\"463\" height=\"478\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meredith Monk (The Standing Room)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->In 1995, when the newspapers and network news shows announced the winners, Meredith Monk was among the names called. At 7:30pm on October 21st, this genre-defying artist will visit the Austin Peay State University Music\/Mass Communication Building\u2019s Concert Hall for the American premiere of \u201cEducation of the Girlchild Revisited,\u201d a reprisal of her classic work \u201cEducation of the Girlchild.\u201d Tickets are $20.00 a person.<\/p>\n<p>The show, considered one of the most influential works in the field of performance art, \u201cpoetically conjures cycles of growth and change in a woman&#8217;s life.\u201d NY Metropolitan Review described \u201cGirlchild\u201d as \u201cart at its best, art that pulses with energy and sets up sympathetic vibrations which echo and reverberate down into our innermost selves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monk began her career as a choreographer and dancer in the 1960s, but then decided to branch out into more experimental forms of artistic expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe began composing and putting together performance pieces that involved music, dance, choreography, visual arts and voice,\u201d Christopher Burawa, executive director of the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, said. \u201cHer work is meant to be evocative \u2013 the visuals, the music, the movement, the voice. It\u2019s a sensory experience that speaks directly to the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51383\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51383\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51383\" title=\"Meredith Monk \" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/meredithpurple.jpg\" alt=\"Meredith Monk \" width=\"213\" height=\"336\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meredith Monk <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Monk is one of the four big name artists coming to campus this year as part of the showcase events celebrating the center\u2019s 25th anniversary. In September, the nationally known Nashville Bluegrass Band performed at APSU. Next semester, award-winning writer Joyce Carol Oates and acclaimed modern dancer and choreographer Molissa Fenley will also visit the University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery one of our showcase events are with nationally recognized artists,\u201d Burawa said. \u201cThat\u2019s the experience we want to bring to Clarksville. And what we\u2019re bringing here this year, you will not find in Nashville. You won\u2019t find it at the Vanderbilt Performing Arts Center, and you\u2019re not going to find it at TPAC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s particularly true with the Meredith Monk show, which is so bold in its originality that it almost defies description.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone used to going to traditional arts performances would find this to be an incredible experience because of how it challenges all limits and boundaries of what it means to engage with the audience,\u201d Burawa said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just somebody sitting on the stage, or an actor playing a part, or a singer singing a song. She\u2019s doing all this at once, and doing it to such a high degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll also provide area residents with the rare treat of seeing in person a recipient of the esteemed MacArthur Genius Award. Monk will take questions from the audience after the performance.
