His father sat next to him as he scrolled through the names of the residence halls, and both men stopped when one name appeared on the screen \u2013 Rawlins Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad was the one who really wanted me to stay in that dorm,\u201d Ben said. \u201cI said, \u2018Let\u2019s do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The residence hall\u2019s name isn\u2019t simply a coincidence. The dorm is named for Ben Rawlins\u2019 great-grandfather, Dr. George Rawlins Jr., who taught at APSU from 1946 to 1964 and served as chair of the chemistry department.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42352\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/RAWLINS-HALL.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42352\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42352 \" title=\"Austin Peay State University's Rawlins Hall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/RAWLINS-HALL-480x289.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University's Rawlins Hall\" width=\"480\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Peay State University&#39;s Rawlins Hall<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cI never met him, but I just really wanted to keep the tradition going,\u201d Ben said.<\/p>\n<p>Rawlins Hall opened in the mid-1960s, following an enrollment boom at APSU. A decade later, Dr. George Rawlins III, a professor of education at APSU and son of the building\u2019s namesake, began joking with students that the building was actually named after him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was named after my father, but I did tease my classes that I was the only faculty member at Austin Peay with a building named after him,\u201d Rawlins III said.<\/p>\n<p>He retired from APSU in 1998, and he was sad to learn recently that Rawlins Hall would be torn down in a few years to make room for more residence halls. But then he heard that his grandson, Ben, would be one of the building\u2019s last residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s great he requested it,\u201d he said. \u201cI just figured he got assigned to it. But I think it\u2019s great he wanted to stay there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On August 26th, Ben Rawlins will join about 600 incoming freshmen as they move into residence halls for the semester. APSU faculty and staff will be on hand from 8:00am to 3:00pm for the \u201cFreshman Welcome Wagon,\u201d to help these new residents unload vehicles and carry boxes to their rooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never even been in Rawlins Hall, so it\u2019ll be totally new,\u201d Ben Rawlins said. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if some of his fellow freshmen ask him about his last name, he might just follow his grandfather\u2019s lead and tell them the dorm is named after him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll definitely try,\u201d he said. \u201cI might pull it over on a few people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Freshman Welcome Wagon, please contact Kim Morrow, associate director of housing\/residence life and dining services, at 931-221-7444 or <a href=\"mailto:morrowk@apsu.edu\">morrowk@apsu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Ben Rawlins decided to attend Austin Peay State University, he went online to look at the different housing options for incoming freshmen.
