\"CustomsClarksville, TN<\/strong> – On Thursday, September 15th, 2022 local Clarksvillians gathered to celebrate history being made in the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center. James T Mann formed a collection of local artists from over the years. <\/p>\n

This exhibit will be on display until October 26th at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis collection today celebrates one person\u2019s dedication to assembling local artwork that is Clarksville’s themed. This happened beginning in the early 1980s until 2005 and Jim Mann was responsible for making this happen today,\u201d Frank Lott mentioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason for this collection was to support the young and growing arts community here in Clarksville. Also, to support the museum. This collection will now be in its permanent home, here in the museum,\u201d Lott continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree artists of the original paintings are still alive to see these exhibitions displayed here in Clarksville. The exhibit holds 20 local artists from over the years,\u201d Lott added.<\/p>\n

Kitty Harvill is a featured artist who was the creator of the collection\u2019s signature piece, Peggy\u2019s Pony. This piece displays a post office here in Clarksville and a recreation of her young mom.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Harvill\u2019s mom is also one of the artists featured in this collection which Kitty grew inspiration from.<\/p>\n

Kitty will receive an award, Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award, later this month for her artwork in Vancouver BC, Canada.<\/p>\n

Stumbling across a painting of my mother altered the entire creation Kitty mentioned. \u201cSeeing the black and white picture, I knew I had to make her dress yellow. Yellow in this painting represented joy and hope,\u201d Kitty commented.<\/p>\n

Sitting and speaking with James Mann was very heart whelming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like art and seeing some of these pieces- had I not bid on them would have gone for next to nothing. It wasn\u2019t fair to the charity that was trying to raise money and it wasn\u2019t fair to the local artist,\u201d James Mann added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I decided to change something about that. We started getting enough people who wanted to bid. And that worked,” Mann stated.<\/p>\n

Since James Mann is a Clarksville native and an art lover it was only right to bring these pieces together and house them here at The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center.<\/p>\n

Whenever you have the chance make sure to check out the Art of Clarksville Collection. It will be on display in the Crouch Gallery through October 26th.<\/p>\n

The original portion of the building was constructed in 1898 as a U.S. Post Office and Customs House for the flourishing tobacco trade. Finally, get \u201call aboard\u201d to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers \u201cride the rails\u201d every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.<\/p>\n

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.<\/p>\n
