\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – Laura Splan<\/a> \u2013 a transdisciplinary artist working at the intersections of science, technology, and culture \u2013 has brought another biomedical research-driven project to Austin Peay State University (APSU), this one focused on the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Splan\u2019s \u201cSyndemic Sublime,\u201d an ongoing series of data-driven computer-generated animations, is this month\u2019s featured exhibition in <terminal>,<\/a> a space in the Art + Design building at Austin Peay State University\u2019s Clarksville campus that showcases new media art.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is available to the public from September 12th-30th during the APSU Art + Design building\u2019s regular hours, 8:00am-4:30pm on weekdays.

\n\u201cFor this show, Splan created computer animations that start with a molecular visualization of SARS-CoV-2 that is then animated based on death statistics from the first 20 months of the pandemic,\u201d said Barry Jones<\/a>, professor of art in APSU\u2019s Department of Art + Design.
\n 
\nThe resulting disruptions create \u201cmesmerizing tableaus that are sometimes spastic and sometimes sublime,\u201d according to Splan\u2019s description of the work. \u201cEach animation has a unique starting and ending form as it slowly morphs from its biological folded form or \u2018conformation\u2019 to its technologically distorted form.\u201d

\nThe process \u201callows for unpredictable and unique transformations within each animation,\u201d and the unraveling and collision of proteins cause \u201cjarring glitches\u201d along with \u201csoothing movements.\u201d<\/p>\n

The animations combine models of proteins from the coronavirus with those of llamas, alpacas, cats, dogs, pangolins, bats and humans.<\/p>\n

\u201cSyndemic Sublime<\/a>\u201d is an examination of \u201cour increasing interspecies entanglements in the contemporary biotechnological landscape,\u201d according to Splan\u2019s description. \u201cFrom zoonotic diseases to transgenic vaccine development, our understanding of what it means to be \u2018human\u2019 in the \u2018natural world\u2019 is becoming increasingly complex.\u201d<\/p>\n

Splan and her work have visited Austin Peay twice before. The New Gallery hosted her \u201cEntangled Entities\u201d in early 2021, and she spoke at the university in 2015 as part of the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA) Visiting Artist Speaker Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe frames complex biomedical issues with provocations of curiosity and wonder \u2013 revealing beauty amongst chaos and resilience amidst crisis,\u201d said Michael Dickins, The New Gallery\u2019s curator and director, last year. \u201cWith her work, Splan choreographs poetic confrontations with science inside the gallery to foster deeper engagement with science outside the gallery.\u201d<\/p>\n
